Phone Barred

I purchased a Nokia 6100 phone from Ebay as an xmas present. The phone was
advertised as 'new' and 'unblocked'. However on receipt I've now realised
that both were false claims. By a process of elimination I've found out
that the phone was reported stolen and has been barred from use on any
network.

A expected the seller has gone AWOL, and as such I'm going through the
complaints process with Ebay.

Could anyone please tell me if the phone should be simply thrown in the bin,
or is there a way it can be un-barred so I could use it?

And how is unlocking it going to help when the phone is barred? It's still
not going to work.

There is software out there which can both unlock the phone & change it's
IMEI number, but lets not go there as it's not strictly legal....

I believe there are ways to change the ime number of the phone although this
is illegal so I cold not recommend it

The best alternative would be to put it on eBay as blocked in the UK
quoting the previous auction you bought it on and the seller and you
may get a buyer wanting to use it abroud. The 6100 is still quite a
good phone so you could get a fair bit compared to just binning it.

There is no way to get it *legitimately* unbarred as you wouldn't be able to
provide the necessary security information to the network which barred the
IMEI in the first place.

The other replies show alternatives, but I can't be seen to promote this
behavior.

Not on a DCT4 Nokia there isn't.
