I would strongly advise against buying this product (Nokia D211
GPRS/WLAN Card) because the UK support for it is non-existent unless
you are prepared to call a premium-rate number charged at 75 pence per
minute. This is what NOKIA UK is doing:

On their web site a local-rate number is given for support, but when
you phone it you are told that you must be a member of Club Nokia to
benefit from free support. You are invited to register for this club -
but then it transpires that you cannot register data products, so are
obliged to call the premium-rate number.

It is also impossible to download updated software for the D211,
because once again you must register the product - yet there is no
obvious facility on the web page to do this.

So, at the end of the day, you finish up with a very expensive product
that does not work and is only fit for the bin.

In my opinion NOKIA support in the UK is appalling and I would urge
everyone to consider this factor before purchasing any NOKIA product.
Today I have spent all morning going round and round in circles
getting absolutely nowhere. This is not exactly being productive.

FWIW - the issue I have with the D211 is that, although it works okay
with GSM and GPRS, it WILL NOT work as a wireless LAN card and there's
no readily-available info from Nokia...unless you pay them 75 pence
    per minute.

Dunno about you - but I call this making a fool of customers.

I downloaded drivers for it a while ago, I remember having to input my
IMEI number and possibly name and address. Wasn't at all stressful.

Mine works fine. What trouble are you having?

Firstly I can't download the latest software from the Nokia UK site
because it requires you to register, but there's no facility on the
page to do this. See here:

    http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,,19551,00.html

However, the main problem is that the D211 will not connect to a
Netgear DG834G wireless router (which is compatible with the card).

In 'ad hoc' mode 'something' appears to happen, but there's no
    connection really.

Whereas in 'infrastructre' mode the card will not pick up an IP
address via DHCP, even though that is enabled for TCP/IP on the
relevant Network Connection in WIN XP and also on the router.
Broadcast SSID from the router is also enabled - but still no joy. The
D211 just keeps 'searching' for the router, to no avail.

Meanwhile, the Netgear WG511 wireless LAN card I have connect to the
router just fine - no worries.

    I'm perplexed.

However, I am also wondering what one is supposed to type in when the
dialogue box asks for 'Network Name' at bootup. Is it looking for the
SSID name of the router? Or something else?

I've even tried ALL the different channels on the router - but again
    no joy.

    Any tips most gratefully received.

Indeed. I filled in information on that page. It must be broken at the
    moment.

    I use a DG824m, with zero difficulty.

I never could get DHCP working, so I just gave it 192.168.0.25

No such troubles like that here.

    I believe so, yes.

Thanks for your prompt feedback Jon. At last the ****** thing is
working (as described in my post at alt.internet.wireless).

The problem was (I think) that you must specify 'b only' in the
wireless setup section of DG834G. The 'b & g' parameter was confusing
    D211 somewhat (I suspect). Also - I 'added' D211 to the Trusted
Stations' list (whereas earlier I had expected D211 to be
automatically recognised as such - like the Netgear WG511 card).

The router has the latest firmware, so I guess it's just that D211 is
fussy. Moreover, I have NEVER had one moment's bother with ANYTHING
Netgear. In my experience each item works perfectly straight out of
the box. Just plug em in and off you go. They virtually configure
    themselves.

If only other companies could make products the same.

So, Herr Nokia is STILL not forgiven. Yours truly has lost an entire
    day's work over this one.

    Thanks anyway. Much obliged.

    Jim

I'm going to try the adding it to trusted stations later on. I would
like to get the DHCP working properly. Thanks for your post. Glad you're
    up and running.

Biggest drawback of the D211? Can't do wifi *and* GSM (for texting and
    receipt of fax) simultaneously.

Agree with you on that, Netgear stuff is top notch.

Register on Club Nokia. What updated software do you need, the out of
the box software works just fine on every machine I've tried.

    Mine works.

The Wireless LAN works. I'm using it now... Are you sure it's not so
much that the card doesn't work, but you've just not got things setup
    properly?

    Check:

    1) "Renew DHCP automatically when needed" in WLAN settings for the
    relevant profile

    2) Do you have "Manage TCP/IP profiles together with profiles?

    3) Have you switched OFF Power Saving on the D211 (which I find on just
about any sort of WLAN devices means it just doesn't work reliably at all

    Yep, that is annoying.

The NetGear stuff is OK, unless it is the early Wireless Access points
they did, which couldn't work reliably for love nor money.
