performance of nokia 6210 after being dropped in glass of water

Last night my daughter decided to test the performance characteristics
of her nokia 6210 in water with the power switched on. Unsurprisingly,
it no longer works. I've removed the sim card and put it into an old
nokia which still allows me to access the network but all her contact
numbers are missing. Any suggestions (excluding the obvious about being
more careful etc etc) as to how I can retrieve data. We're running
System OSX on mac.

The contacts were probably held on the phone and not the SIM.

I hope you've left the battery off it?

Strip the phone (have a look at the UselessInfo site in my sig) and put the
parts somewhere warm and dry (but don't use direct heat) for about a week.
If possible have the main circuit board cleaned in an ultrasonic bath.

Once it's totally dried out reassemble it and see if it works - you may need
a new battery.

I dropped my nokia 3650 in a fountain once and it's still working. This is
what i did:

After i discovered the phone was in the water, i quickly removed it (duh!!).
The screen looked all weird and such. I removed the battery immediately.
I shook out the access water immediately (after removing the battery, sim)
Back home i dried it out with a hair-dryer. Most people say NOT to use
direct heat. This is true; i set the dryer to the lowest setting and held it
at a long distance from the phone ( at least one or two feet (30/60cm) ).
Did this for quite a while.
Overnight i rested it on the windowsill that was just above the heating
system.
Next day, my phone worked except the phone's microphone did no longer work.
The microphone suddenly worked again a day later.

How long ago did that happen? I would expect corrosion in the main
board to be continuing to eat away and eventually cause a fault that
cannot be fixed.

That happened about just over a year ago, May 2004. The phone is still
working like a charm :=)
