A friend of mine has a Nokia 6680 on Orange (UK) and wants to get rid of the
menu bar on the left hand side of the home screen . I have looked in the
manual but cannot find a way of removing it

    Cheers

    Mike

You can't get rid of it using the UI. It is an "Orange customisation".
The only way to remove it is to get it de-branded by flashing the
    firmware again with non-orange version.

Might cost you, depending on where you get it done.

Your friend is not alone - I'm trying to get mine sorted too, it's
bloody irritating and uses WAY too much memory for what it is (means my
games don't play properly till I close it down, but it just randomly
    restarts again anyway).
I'm going to try taking it to a club nokia service point complaining of
instability of phone to get the firmware updated, and being very nice
to them in order to try getting it updated with non-Orange firmware.
This ba$tardisation of the phone has means I'm likely to go to O2 next
time I can change it 'cause they don't seem to screw their phones up
quite so bad (at least not on my sisters 6680 anyway). I just wish
Orange would listen to these gripes though so I didn't have to bother.

Several shops on the internet will do it - expect to pay around £20.

I can do it for £15 (by paypal) and that includes the return postage.

Thanks for the feedback , he has managed to convince a local service centre
that a free firmware re-flash was a good idea .
