I have a mint "unused" Nokia 6150. The phone does work (ie you can make
and receive calls) but the "Up" , "Down" , "Menu" and "Names" keys do
    not function correctly.

When you press the above keys , instead of the required function ,
certain "characters" are displayed on the LCD. When you press "Menu" ,
you get the number "1" , the "Up" key gives the number "4" , the "Down"
key gives the number "7" and the "Names" key gives the "#" . All these
"wrong" characters are duplicates of the left hand side of the keypad
    ie 1, 4, 7 , # .

Any thoughts on likely causes. Is it a corruped EEPROM which needs to
be reflashed? Or is it a faulty keypad membrane (broken track , short
etc)? Or is it something else?

    Thanks

It could be a duff membrane, but the only way to tell would be to take it
apart and look. The 6150 is dead easy to open up, just 4 torx screws. You
might try removing the backup battery inside, but I can't remember if
that's soldered in or not. Take it apart and clean everything in sight and
    see if that cures it.

    Thanks

Does removing the backup battery provide a "reboot" which might fix the
    keypad problem?

Any views on whether a corrupt EEPROM can actually cause "keypad
confusion" or whether a corrupt EEPROM usually has the effect of
    complete operational failure?

Any thoughts on why the "Up" , "Down" , "Menu" and "Names" keys are
    mirroring the 1, 4 , 7 , and # keys?

    Thanks
