.... between a SIM card and a USIM one?

I've tried a Google but all I get is people offering SIM/USIM cards; not
a description of what the difference is.

SIM is what you use in a normal GSM phone, USIM in what you use in a 3G
    capable phone.

Thanks GS. Next question: If you use a SIM in a 3G phone what do you
    miss out on?

Supplementary question: Are there physical differences between the two
types such that you can tell which you've got just by looking at them,
or is there a test to see which is installed in the phone?

My questions are posed because when I bought a card for my 6680 I got a
standard SIM (I think) and I'm not sure what I'm missing out on, if
    anything.

They Look the same, USIM=3G=video calling/ high speed internet connections
etc.......2G SIM=standard voice calls, GPRS slow net connection.

    thats about it really.

Some 2G phone will accept a 3G USIM and allow 2G service from it.

Not all 3G operators use USIM though. Vodafone in the UK are using
"normal" SIMS for 3G services aswell. You simply need to speak to them
    to get the SIM enabled.
