In about 8 hours I am leaving on a 2 week trip, and the previous 8
hours messing with this Nokia 3200 and PC Suite 6.8 have me ready for
the nut house. Worst part is that I really don't "need" it to work, but
I made a special trip to find a data cable, and between trying stuff
and surfing the net I have exchanged my sanity and skipped a nights
sleep.
Nokia 3200 running current US V a3.12 19-11-03 RH-31
Cheapy data cable, USB with Prolific chip, drivers downloaded from
their site. Tag on cable says Nok 3200.
Nokia PC Suite 6.8 english software.
Generic XP pro desktop system, prolific shows up as com3. Nothing, not
a hint anything is going on, phone does nothing, PC Suite never detects
a phone.
Dell D400 notebook XP pro, enabled IRDA, and tried data cable. Nothing
with data cable, but IRDA does a few connect/disconnect sounds. I read
in another post that slowing down the IRDA port (currently max is 4M)
may help, so planning on giving that a try in a day or so.
Any hints?

Hiya mate!
Slowing the IRDA port down MAY help, but it's not a 'proper' fix.
My advice to you is, don't go for the 'cheapy' cables. Get yourself a
proper Nokia cable, especially if you're going to be using it
regularly. The other option, if it's available on your phone, is to get
yourself a Bluetooth dongle! They can be a pain to get set up
(especially if you get one that uses WIDCOMM drivers), but once set up,
it is a very reliable method of connection.
Hope this helps?

Unfortunately, the standard Suite doesn't support cheaper ProLific-based
cables. We can recommend to have a look at Oxygen Phone Manager (
http://www.opm-2.com/ ) or Oxygen Express ( http://www.oxygen-express.com/ )
.. Oxygen Phone Manager II allows to work with the phonebook, your phone's
calendar, SMS messages and gallery and Oxygen Express provides full backup
and restore functinality for these sections. You can download free trial
versions of our programs here:

Nuts, I had no idea the standard suite was so fussy. I will check out
your software when I get home.

Please, don't hesitate to contact us if you'll face with any problems.
Non-original cable may require some additional settings, but it works with
our software and we are always ready to help with setting it up.
