I have the unlock code T-Mobile sent so our son can use his phone with
prepaid SIM cards when he's overseas on a study program.
Do we enter that code now to unlock the phone, or does he have to wait
until he has the "foreign" SIM card? Some Web sites seem to say that the
"foreign" SIM card has to be in place first. And if that is so, does it
unlock the phone only for that specific SIM card?

Enter Unlock Codes on Nokia phones:
Switch ON your phone without SIM Card
Compose #pw+code+1# ("code" given to you by network provider)

Put any other SIM in the 'phone and then enter the code when prompted. Try
and make sure it's a SIM from another network as other T-Mobile SIMS
won't/may not ask for the code.

The instructions from T-Mobile say nothing about inserting the other SIM
card first or about being *prompted* for a code: they set out a bunch of
keystrokes to enter, followed by the unlock code they sent, followed by
more keystrokes.
