I have purchased GSM phones from eBay in the past and have no problems
using them on the T-Moble USA system. In the past however I have
purchased phones that were on the list of T-Mobile supported phones.
This time I am thinking of purchasing a Nokia 5140 because of its
combination of price and features (GPRS, EDGE, IrDA).

Has anyone on the USA network had problems using a GSM phone that was
not listed in the "Select your phone" system on T-Mobile's website? I
would also be interested if someone here has tried a Nokia 5140 on the
    USA T-Mobile system.

To get GPRS services for the Nokia 5140 I assume I would need to
select Nokia 6610 from the web based system. I'm not sure if I would
be limited to sub-EDGE speeds. I would be disappointed if I did not
get faster connection than my Nokia 6610, but sence my 6610 is acting
erratically, a new GPRS phone would be worth having with out EDGE
    speeds.

I've been using an AT&T TILT, and prior to that a Treo 680 on a prepaid
    T-Mobile SIM without any problems.

I had data working nicely on the Treo 680 during the
unlimited-data-for-free period, but since then I haven't bothered to set
up my TILT to use data since I don't have any need for the minimal sites
    that T-Mobile makes available.

VM indicators and SMS worked once I set SMS to use GSM and not GPRS.
