Use Nokia's Email Program, download here:
    https://netac4.vie.hosting.nokia.com...nt/home.action

Configure it for Push Email, works very well for me.

Beware though, anything you delete from the phone will also be deleted from
    the server.

    Enjoy.

Sorry. didn't read all of your post.
The emails will also show on your PC if you don't delete them from the
    phone.

Last sentence not correct in my experience.

Better late than no response at all...

There are five ways I've tried to get my Gmail on my E71.

1: Use the standard email client.
2: Use the Nokia Labs beta client.
    3: Use Profimail.
    4: Use the GoogleMail application.
5: Use the GoogleMail mobile-optimised site.

I wanted a blend of functionality, low power consumption and ease of
configuration. I have been using a Treo 680 and Chatteremail+ for superb
    push email.

Of the above, the standard email client does not support push email, at
least, not using Gmail. Sometimes my device leaves itself connected and
doesn't download new messages. Oh and it only downloads headers in IMAP
mode, not email bodies; very annoying.

The Nokia Labs beta email works well enough. It integrates with the device,
it supports push email, I was happy and used this for my Gmail. It may
eventually change to a pay-to-use service so I wanted to try other options.

Profimail 3.x now supports push email. It isn't that I don't like Profimail
and the latest version looks a lot better than earlier versions thanks to
theme colour support, but I'm sorry to say that I didn't see any advantage
using Profimail over and above the Nokia Labs beta email. Profimail
improved when the authors added IMAP-idle (push) to it.

The GoogleMail application has a few major weaknesses. One, it won't beep
at you. It will, however, vibrate the handset if you have that option on.
It does not handle attachments very well - you can't send one. It doesn't
offer push but checks your email on a regular basis. It doesn't integrate
with the handset at all - you can't get it to show you how many emails are
waiting for you on the homepage, for example. And you can't use it to start
a new email from the "New Message" icon either. It is, however, free and it
has not crashed or misbehaved once.

Using Gmail's website... feels a bit backwards _but_ I find this works
pretty well, if not quite as easy to navigate as the GoogleMail application
above. Handier for working with files, or if you need or want to send
    stuff, you can...

....do as I do. I'm using a Microsoft Exchange email account in push mode
and the GoogleMail application, where it'll vibrate to advise me of a new
message. It isn't a push email. I'm coping with that. One day it may
migrate to IMAP-idle and I'll have my emails pushed to the device.

I do have the account set up in the standard Nokia email application and I
use this to *send* emails with file attachments. This works well too.

Don't know if this applies to you, but Profimail (the trial version), I
could only read any emails that were written in English, and nothing in Thai
(my phone was purchased in Thailand and I regularly send and receive both
English and Thai SMSs and Emails from my phone).
With Nokia Mail, this was not a problem.
