I have narrowed it down to these two phones. I need an unlocked GSM, 3G
not important, WiFI very important, camera? I got a dozen of 'em. So,
    these are the choices.

    I need:

    Good Reception for fringe areas.
    Good sound.
    SMS
    Good Web Browsing over WiFi
    E-mail
    A nice MP3 player.

I have a Palm 755p that I really like when it doesn't freeze (usually when
I REALLY need to do something quickly...), I don't want to run Windows
(can you run Linux on a Nokia?)

The only other contender is a Samsung Epix, some say they're great, some
say they're UGH, but they have a touch screen. Or perhaps a Palm Pro?

I got a headache! So, if you had to choose between one of the 4, which
would you get, and in what order? The Blackberry and the Nokia are running
neck and neck. Other Nokias I have had have been OK, never had a BB...

Can't comment on the Blackberry, but the E63 is quite popular here in
India. For the features you've listed above, it is a very capable
handset and should more than meet your needs. I guess it boils down to
    the UI.

Well I have an N79 and BB Curve 8900 from work. The 8820 is similar spec,
but seems to lack a camera or maps.

Both work on 900, 1800 GSM and UMTS

    > Good sound.

You need to use headphones with either for this.

    > SMS

    Both OK

    > Good Web Browsing over WiFi

The N79 runs at several Mbps (not measured) with a good signal, however the
BB only runs at ~100kbps - far slower than the N79 on 3G!

    > E-mail

Blackberry mail is push and quite well behaved.

The N79 can do email three different ways: -
    Email built into the messaging.
    Nokia Mail
    Mobile mail app from BT

of which the second is the nicest (they all work)

    > A nice MP3 player.

Both OK - the Nokia does some sorting by genre / artist etc., but this
feature may be asbent from the E63, which is a business model.

Other significant differences is that the Nokia can navigate maps offline
    and open PDF's natively.

    Oh, dear!

While looking and looking and looking I ran across a review for the E61. I
prefer a phone without a camera becuase for work I have to go places where
no cameras are allowed, but the case I have my Palm in covers the camera
    lens ;p

So, in reading the reviews for the 8820 and the E63 there was always a It
does this well, but... CNET always had a but for both phones and PC
    Mag...WHEW! Those guys are tough!

Every review of the E61 had no caveats, and I found one on eBay slightly
used. Waiting for it now! (should be here before Friday).

Thanks for the response, perhaps in a year the N8 will be next in line,
since I change every 12-18 months. But if I leave this job I won't need
the email or the web, and can focus on the more important things...my Sony
Ericsson has a marvelous MP3 player!

I wound up getting a used E61 on eBay. Thanks for the response! I think if
    I hadn't found an E61 (I don't really want a camera, I have PLENTY of
them!) I would have gotten the E63.

No - all the E and N series phones run S60 3rd Edition(5th edition for
touchscreen ones), and the music player is an integral and identical
component across them all. The E63 has some additional features for
business, like remote wiping the phone in case of theft, full encryption
of all data, synchronizing corporate mail, etc.

I think the answer is "No", but is there any way to load v5 onto an E61?
My last Nokia phone was a phone/FM radio from 2005...a 6101. I only got
the Sony because I wanted an MP3 player.

No - unlike Android, you cannot upgrade the OS on a Nokia phone. At any
rate, S60 v5 is for touchscreen phones and has little to distinguish it
    from v3 FP2. Your E61 uses v3 FP1 - so FP2 would have been better as an
upgrade. If only it was possible.

If you want the latest in a traditional non touchscreen phone, you'd
have to go with the E72, which runs S60 v3 FP2, the last non-touch OS
from Nokia. It has Blackberry style qwerty keyboard and is quite an
    excellent handset.
    http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_e72-review-422.php

Otherwise wait for the upcoming Symbian^3 phones - the E7 is a business
phone with a slide out qwerty keyboard, while the C6 and C7 have
touchscreens. All of them have integrated social networking features,
wifi, GPS, HD video recording etc.

I have been saying for a while, with all the ads there are on TV for cell
phones, HOW ABOUT GETTING THE *PHONE* PART DOWN FIRST!

I'm on a budget! I don't have a 'plan' so I pay the going rate. My last
phone was (is) a Palm 755p, locked to Verizon CDMA, and I paid $36 for it
on eBay. I got it about a month after the phone before that, a Palm 650,
because the volume was so low on the 650 I couldn't hear it in the car!
That one was a whopping $12! I fired it up the other day, and if you're in
a quite place, it's great. I'm going to miss my Palms, of the dozen or so
phones I have had, 5 of them ran Palm OS.

Aside from that, I have two digital cameras and about 8 film cameras, so a
camera is not required. I don't tweet or facebook, etc, so that's not
important. Ya know, when it comes right down to it, I HATE phones! I just
need it for work! When I was doing Tech Support with a Plantronics glued
to my head, it was enough for a lifetime! I do need a strong phone
because I cover Western Mass, south west NH and south east VT, and some
areas are pretty fringe. Nokia seems to handle these areas well. I also
need SMS, email and Web, but I can't get a web plan on my new provider, so
WiFI (which I shunned before because I had unlimited data) is now a
    neccessity!

I couldn't find a good deal on an E71, and the full screen phones would be
dripping goo from the screen in my pocket in no time flat! I cracked the
screen on the 6101, but it was just the top glass.

    I saw a Blackberry Torch yesterday, and that's a similar design to the E7;
a medium sized screen that can be used by touch, with a sliding QWERTY.
Cool phone, but I don't have that much scratch!

(Although with what I'm going to save by leaving Verizon, I could probably
pay for it in a year!!!)

Thanks for the input! I'll keep my eyes open, since I change phones about
every year...for a model from three years ago!

Ah. I was wondering about that. So, you can't add the FPs yourself? and,
Nokia can't do it either, eh? FP1 seems to have a few 'issues'...

There's one thing about Nokia - they have the 'phone' part down pat -
you get clear reception and voice (assuming you have a halfway decent
mobile operator) and their phones are pretty rugged. Can't comment on
the newer touchscreen phones though; I've got an N82 for the last 2 and
a half years. It's had a few falls and scratches and the paint is
starting to peel off, but it works like a charm and still takes the best
photos compared to newer ones thanks to the xenon flash and Carl Zeiss
optics(the latter of which have been standard on Nokia cameraphones for
    over 5 years).

As I understand it's hard to get unlocked phones to work with your
operator in the US unless it's T-Mobile.
Go with the E72..perhaps you can find a bargain price on eBay.

Got a nicely used Mokia E61 from eBay, got here today. First impressions:

Wonderful sound! Nice clear voice and no noticable hiss, even with GSM
    850/1900 service.

Ringtones and notifications are loud and clear! The Palm 755p I have
sometimes causes me to miss calls/messages because the riingers aren't
loud enough. I don't think this is going to be an issue.

The reception is acceptable, although I haven't taken it for a ride to the
more fringe areas. In my office it is better than the CDMA Palm, but a
liitle less than my Sony W300. Not much less, though. But with only one
bar showing it still sounded better than my Palm with one bar showing.

The lack of a touch screen is kind of a bummer, but the "joystick" kind of
    makes up for it.

The screen is bright and clear, albeit the icons and text are a little
small. I am farsighted, so glasses are a MUST looking at the screen.

It is wider than a Palm, so the keyboard is large and one-handed texting
is not fun. Two handed texting is just fine, and the way the keys are
laid out and the modifying keys (Shift/Character) are lockable. Nice.

The menus, as expressed by others, are nested in kind of a funny way, but
again, the joystick makes navigating easier.

Maybe someday I'll move up to the Latest and Greatest, but since I am a
cheapskate and don't like to spend $$$ on phones, I'll wait for another
three years to get a model that's current now!

to the people who indicated Nokia got the phone part right, so far I would
have to agree. I made a test call with one bar showing, and the person I
was talking to said it sounded clear.
