It looks like you have attached an image to a number in your phone (i.e.
add a thumbnail) and it's just a black one? That's all I can think of
as the image location and the situation you mention - is exactly the
same place and occurs when a phone call comes in and a picture is added
    to a person (photo ID).

I just re-read your message and you say it occurs when you make calls,
does it not occur on receiving them then? What I just said above
probably isn't correct then. Try a software update at your Nokia
service centre - I think the highest is 4.48 now.

Is there any way of upgrading the software myself?

Yes, if you've got plenty of money to spare. Griffin, Neelix or AFD will do
the job, but will cost you approx £250+. If it's under warranty, take it to
a NSC, or get ourselves or one of the regulars in here to do the job for
    you.

No, you will still need the hardware described in my last post to flash the
    firmware to the phone.

If you have a 'nice' Nokia service centre they will usually do it
regardless of age. Anyway the Nokia 7650 has not been out for a year so
all models (unless grey imports) should be under Nokia warranty.

Yeah, if you say so. I'd really send a phone to someone who isn't even
aware of just what you can do with it, and what will screw it up.

    > Richie lives in a **** house

    No, it's built from bricks.

    <snip moronic diatribe>

Can't you tell it's the school holidays, all the dipsticks get to use Mummy
    & Daddy's computer.

if there is a service center then that will be neat... they will get the
software updated for you in no time.... be aware that all you phonebook
and calendar memos will be erased when upgraded.. best to transfer them
into the computer before sending them to ther service center fot
    repairs
