The other day, my wife's 7650 ws ringing but stopped before she go to it.
The resulting missed call came from... herself!

    eh?

So, I looked into it, and the call actually came from a different but very
similar number. Hers is 0919-xxxxxxx and the caller's was 0910-xxxxxxx (where
    the xxxxxxx are identical).

Strange. I tried some experiments with my 6100, and it was the same. It seems
that if I have two different contacts, with the above numbers, the phone can't
tell the difference. Perhaps it only looks at the last 7 digits?

    Re: Caller display/phonebook error

This has been a long time "problem" with Nokia phones - at least 6 years. I
discovered this in '97 when I obtained two numbers for my wife and daughter
which had the same last 7 digits. We thought it was a clever thing to do
and considered ourselves rather lucky that we got such similar numbers but
the problem was that when either of them called me, my wife's name always
appeared as the caller ID!! I don't understand why Nokia have never fixed
this as it is surely a relatively straightforward change to the software.

    [top post snipped]

I don't know about other phones (only ever used Nokias) but they only
associate the last 6 digits with phonebook entries.

When I had 2 similar numbers (landline not mobile) I had them
    consecutively numbered, i.e. 01234 567890 & 891.

Last 6 digits IIRC - the same in every Nokia phone I have ever had. (I
don't know if other manufacturers do the same.) It's not a bug, it's
documented and how it's meant to work.

There is a logic behind it. It increases a chance of a correct match if
you have a number entered in a different format; +4420xxxxxxxx will
match the CLI of 020xxxxxxxx. It also helps when numbering changes -
here in the UK when London numbers changed from 0171 xxxxxxx to 020
7xxxxxxx there was a period of dual-running for a few months; you might
call the new number but the CLI might show the old number.
