    Hello,

I am currently using a Nokia 3360 on ATTWS. My contract is just about
up, and the phone has been having trouble finding a signal lately.

    Here's the operating condtions:

I still want to stick with Nokia (I like using Logomanager to upload
    my own songs)

I prefer to stick with a phone with infrared connection

I have a plan with a low monthly allotment of minutes, and have never
    gone over

I travel fairly frequently, not always just to major cities, and want
to avoid roaming and long distance charges.

Any suggestions as to which Nokia phone to use with which
provider that can provide the best chances of being found at the least
    charges would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Murray D'Elf

Re: Yet Another "Which phone/provider" Message

    Hi Murray,

Check out the Nokia 6340i. It is GAIT compliant and does GMS, TDMA, AMPS,
etc. plus email, internet and free software to transfer Outlook, etc.
schedules. The best provider may depend upon where in the country you use
    it the most.

Had an interesting experience getting this phone from Cingular (free). I
picked it out from their site, but had some questions, so I ordered it over
the phone, selecting Cingular Nation 500 for $39.95 with 5,000 N&W, no
roaming, free long distance, etc. with rollover. It takes her about 15
minutes to find the plan, then she asks ME what the rate is (the same plan
appears other places as $49.95). Later that day check their site and the
6340i had disappeared. Then that night it is back, but the Nation plan now
has a note that says it is not compatible with the 6340i. When the phones
arrive, the contract is filled out for the Home plan, not the Nation plan.

I call to activate and tell them Nation 500, they activate the phone and
it is working fine, after it takes him about 10 minutes to find the plan,
then he goes to put in the billing and their billing s/w refuses to accept
it. After many attempts, we suddenly get disconnected. I call again,
after much conversation, I'm told that I can get Preferred Nation 525 with
5,000 N&W and rollover and the computer will accept the Nokia 6340i. But,
there will be a roaming charge for carriers that don't have roaming agreement
with Cingular - BUT in the Southeast, Cingular has agreements with all the
carriers except those that are blocked anyway (so the net result is that in
the southeast Nation = Preferred Nation). We shall see.

Strange that the plan that most matches the phone (works anywhere in the
    nation), is blocked by Cingular.

The only problem with the 6340i is that the antenna is on the back, so
signal is reduced when you lay it down, and it's display is not color.

    Ray,

Not to make an excuse, but the plans you speak of are brand new, as of
    July 1. there is a CN GSM 500 for $39.99 and a CN GAIT 500 for $49.99. I
personally made cheat sheets on these plans for my team members and
several other teams which have helped. Telesales, unfortunately, is not
customer service, so they were likely the last to know. You mentioned
that it's the same as Pref Net? Not hardly, Pref Net was a pain in the
ass, checking the phone to see if it says extend all the time, the CN
GAIT plan actually has the same Nationwide Free Roaming code that the
original Cingular Nation plans had. My personal opinion is that the CN
GAIT plans with your choice of phone (Nokia, of course) is one of the
    best offerings anywhere.

Re: Yet Another "Which phone/provider" Message

Good, somebody that really knows what is happening! I think what I was
told was, that for the area I normally travel, I should never see the
Extend message since all the providers either have an agreement with
Cingular, or are blocked. So far, in SC this seems to be correct.

What was confusing me at first was when my phone was activated with
Cingular Nation, it immediately switched to Cingular Extend, then
after changing to Preferred Nation, I never see Cingular Extend. I
thought that meant it was not accepting any TDMA towers. But apparently,
Cingular Extend with Nation and Extend with Preferred Nation are two
different things. With Nation, Cingular Extend means either TDMA, or a
non-Cingular tower (TDMA means a non-Cingular tower in my area anyway?)???
With the Preferred Nation, any Cingular or non-Cingular tower with
    reciprocity agreement displays as Cingular; Cingular Extend never displays;
and Extend only displays with a tower that has no reciprocity agreement
and will result in a roaming fee. Is that mostly correct?

When I ordered the GAIT phone, there was no notice on the site about
the 6340i not being available with the Nation plan, so this whole thing
    really confused me.

    Hi!

The Nokia 9210i and the Nokia 6800 are great for keeping in touch with home.

The Nokia 9210i doesn't need the Nokia PC Suite installed for transferring
files - just send as you would to a regular PC. Haven't used the 6800 yet.
