When my 6610 goes into Screen Saver mode with the digital clock moving up &
down the screen, the clock itself is very hard to see unless you hold the
camera on a certain angle. Is there anyway of making the numbers darker or
    is this standard?

It's standard. If you don't lock the keypad, it will light up (before reverting
to the normal screen) when you press a key, but otherwise it's very dark.

its a power saving feature, so its not meant to be very easy viewable.

However if you have the software upgraded at a nokia centre the later
versions have a brighter clock than the older ones .

Really? I recently had mine upgraded from v3.09 to v4.74, i've noticed no
    differance.
As the screen is black when no charge is going through the pixels, Nokia
have chosen to only 'light up' the pixels in relation to the numbers,
therefore it saves a lot of power.
