Just got my 6800, trying to get use to it. Does anyone know how to keep the
back light on longer or turn it back on without loosing my place. And also
when the keyboard is locked and it is in sleep mode, how do I turn on the
backlight to see the time in the dark without jumping through hoops. Any
    help is greatly appreciated.

There's no way to adjust the length of time that the light stays on.
And I haven't found a way to turn the light on without losing my place.

But when the phone is locked, try pressing the power key to get the
    light to come on.

Menu/Settings/DisplaySettings may have what you want
Turning the light on without 'losing your place' is eay when the keyboard is
open, the shift key and others will do that.
From the phone keyboard I use either of the 2 top buttons but not sure if
that could sometimes change something which you were doing.
Not sure what you mean by sleep mode. Do you mean when the display switches
to a clockafter a few minutes? If so, then any key seems to work

(only just got my 6800 too, so I may not be the best advisor!)

Thanks, but it turned of the large clock and brought that stupid prompt that
says "hey dummy you keys are locked", the light's on though.

If you lock the keyboard, you have to press the top left button (menu) then
    the * key.
That is normal for all Nokias I think.
If you don't like that, then don't lock the phone!

And dial Bangkok by mistake? Nokia needs to do more market research, but
then again the US is not their biggest market share. Our wireless
technologies are so far behind Taiwan and Japan it's not even funny.

    So what is the problem?
You don't like the phone unlocked in case you call Bangkok by mistake. Me
    too.
And you don't seem to like it locked because it is too hard to turn back on.
You really think there is an easy way to turn it on which cannot be done by
    accident?
    Which phone has that?
And I am pretty sure that Nokia is still the market leader in the Far East
(I live in SE Asia) but I don't know about Japan and Taiwan. What do they
    use there?

Read all the posts, I want the phone to light up it's backlighting, without
unlocking the phone so I can read the time in the dark!

Oops had not read carefully enough.
The light comes on if you hit the power button even if the keyboard is
locked, but not with the other buttons (I suppose this is to avoid the light
being switched on all the time if the phone is in yr pocket, leading to a
    flat battery)

Also I am not sure if pressing the power button will automatically anser the
call - you may need to change the "anykey answers" setting to off as well.
