After buying my 6800, a co-worker liked mine so much he ran out and
purchased one also. Then this person informs me that he knows where I am
all the time. He claims that he logs on to the net with his phone and looks
for my number and there I am, he says. And he claims that if I am logged on
also it even provides him with a map to pin point where I am, please tell me
he is full of crap. If this is true how can I shut this off or am I going to
have to give my phone up? Changing the number is not an option, yet.

    6800 AT&T GSM.

Actually you can pinpoint the location of any cell phone by calculating the
distance with 3 transmitters. But it can be done only by the officials. If
the mobile is stolen or something, it's not available to everyone. Though I
heard they are developing something like you said, that you can add
"friends" to your list and you can track them down, it's some special
feature, don't know if it's already in use.

This service is availble in the UK and there ares serveral companies
providing such a service - at a cost. One use is where parents can
keep an eye on where their young children are.

This 'friend' is full of crap. It is available in the UK but only on
a subsciption basis ie you know that you're releasing this info. In
the US they don't even have the full technology deployed yet for E911.
Remember the FCC kicking up a stink that all the carriers had missed
the deadline? Even this only promised position to 300 meters 90% of
the time and 100 m 66%. Location based services will be coming but
they (AWS - AT&T Wireless Services) don't even have the hardware
    deployed yet.

I say you can pooh-pooh his claims!
