it could be caused by a few things:

firmware or possibly the battery contacts.

Or water/condensation damage. We seem to be getting a few of these at the
moment with mixed results for repairing them.

A replacement battery in one of our 3310's was found to be a little
shorter in height, than the one it replaced. It was possible to slide
the battery up and down a fraction of an inch. It was marked up as an
original Nokia, but I have my doubts. This kept switching off.

A piece of thin card inserted at the opposite end to the contacts,
seems to have fixed this problem.

The most likely culprit is the firmware, which you can have updated. It
could be other things, but in most cases it's the firmware.

in one occurence it was the power button cocking up.... (rubber button
    itself)

You can't flash firmware with a data cable, you need flasher cables at the
very least, or for preference, a Dejan box (cheap enough now). As for flash
files, the only thing I can suggest is to try some of the decent forums -
http://beam.to/gsmforum or http://nokiafree.org/forums are probably your
    best bet.

Trade it in at The Link for £10 against a NEW 3410 on T-Mobile, etc...
Then unlock your new phone and use your old sim in it!
3410 is 10x better than a 3310 and they are very cheap now... Keep an eye
on prices at the weekends... I got one for £39.99!
(around 100% off what they used to be).
3410 has the main 3310/3330 features with the bugs fixed, including this
    one!

One of the many 'bonus' features of this Nokia model. Auto-Switch off.
