I have a pama plug'n go hands free thingy which is OK (quite good
really) with my 6210 - but with the new 6310i it fails. The phone
recognises it immediately and changes to hands free, then after a few
seconds goes out of hands free (so the pama speaker doesn't work) then
back on, then off, then on ....... etc etc. at about 20 second
    intervals.

I have fiddled about with the 'physical' connection and it is secure -
and it behaves like this in 2 cars and even if stationary so its not
"bumpy road blues". I've swapped the batteries (the 6210 is a little
thicker so I though that might help) but to no avail.

Any ideas ? How do the 6310i connections differ from the 6210, they
    look the same to me.

Get a genuine Nokia car kit, these cheap & nasty things never perform as
well. The CARK-91 is the one you want, there are plenty on ebay (no I'm
not selling one, but I did buy mine there..!)

BTW the connector is the same but the phone isn't (clue).
