    Dear All

If I get a Bluetooth headset and pair it with the phone and then get a
connection to my laptop over IR can I make a call using Bluetooth set to
phone while being connected to my office network via GPRS via the IR?

If yes how do I do it? Am I being overly ambitious here? It would save the
    need for carrying two mobiles.

I basically want to be able to connect to work via GPRS and speak to people
    as well.

Better solution is to buy USB BlueTooth dongle (cca. EUR 35) and you can use
your Nokia as phone and as modem at the same time. I tried - it's working.

Strange - my 6310i will pair with my headset or my PC but not both at once.

I get the same thing when its connected to my CARK-112. It has to
disconnect before doing anthing else bluetooth.

    I dont think so.

Think you will find that Bluetooth only allows 1 connection per point
    at any one time

To take this a little further :-)

AFAIK a bluetooth dongle on a PC can support multiple connections (e.g. my
TDK USB dongle can allegedly support 7 connections at the same time) however
my 6310i does not seem to support more than one connection.
This is probably a reflection on the relative power and complexity of the PC
and Windows vs. the Nokia handset platform.

Again AFAIK you can maintain a BT connection for GPRS from the PC and make
phone calls from the handset (which suspends the GPRS while a voice call is
    in progress).

I don't think you can use a BT headset whilst you are using the phone as a
BT GPRS modem for the PC.

Which gets back to the OP - who was, I think, trying to get around this by
using an IR connection for the GPRS session to allow the use of a BT headset
for voice calls at the same time. Presumably the same strategy would apply
for a cable connection instead of an IR connection.

So - nobody has answered the original question yet but we seem to agree that
doing the whole thing over BT is not on :-)

Combinations that should (?) work with GPRS and voice calls i.e you can
interrupt the GPRS packet session to make a voice call then resume the GPRS
    packet call:

IR modem connection and no headset
BT modem connection and no headset
Cable modem connection and no headset
IR modem connection and cable headset
BT modem connection and cable headset

So will IR modem and BT headset work?

Note that use of IR or BT or cable for access to a modem is assumed to
support interruptions for a voice call.
    I haven't tried this.
It is possible thet GPRS suspend/resume may only work for applications that
are onboard to the mobile handset.

    Cheers

It's a moot point though - as far as I know your phone can not have an
active GPRS while in a call or receiving a message or whatever. You can
easily see this if you make your GPRS connection permanent. As soon as you
start to make/receive a call, or send/receive a text message the "G" gets
crossed out indicating the GPRS connection is suspended. You can resume it
afterwards as if nothing had happened of course. But as I said, it's a moot
point, it doesn't matter if you can or can't have more than one bluetooth
connection to your phone as you can never use them at the same time even if
you could. It says in the manual that it "suspends" the GPRS connection (if
set to permanent) whenever you make/receive a call or send/receive text.

For reference, you CAN have more than one connection to a given Bluetooth
point. Nokia phones only support one connection to themselves as they would
only ever need to use one.

mmm, interesting. I was under the impression there were not many
phones that you can force to make a permanent connection. This pissed
me off after I bought it, because the carriers advertise the merits of
    GPRS as being ALWAYS ON.

So, if ya can, how do I make a permanent GPRS connection with my
6310i. I am in Australia on Vodafone.

I'm doing this from memory as it's been a month since I had a 6310i, but...

In connection settings, edit active service settings (assuming you have your
GPRS connection as the default one and not a WAP one), go down to "Session
Mode" and set this to "Permanent". Done. You could also check that you've
told it to use GPRS by scrolling down a bit more and checking "Data bearer"
is set to "GPRS". If it's not you weren't using it anyway.

If this all works, you should have a "G" in the top left of your display
saying there's an active GPRS connection. Whenever you make a call or
receive a message the G will be crossed out as it temporarily suspends the
    connection.

Except when I'm connected to my BT carkit (which happens automatically) and
want to also use the phone modem via bluetooth. No major hassle, but it
means the carkit has to be manually disconnected and reconnected. It'd be
convenient if it'd support more connections, even if it only allowed one to
    be active at a time.

Yeah - I see what you mean...

I know on some PC BT cards you can set a priority, so when you have your
limit (say 7) and you add more devices you can tell it to use one over
another. It would be good if Nokia (and other phone manufacturers) could
allow your PC Modem to take priority over your car kit.
