I have downloaded a screensaver, but Im not sure how to enable it instead of
the clock screensaver.
the data suite installed it in the applications directory, and I can look at
it by opening it up (as on a pc), but cannot seem to find a way to enable it
to come on instead of the original one.
am I missing something, or am I trying to something that cannot be done ?

can't be done.
what you need to to is physically open the screensver application whenever
you want it displayed.
[correct me if i'm wrong - i'd love to change the standard screensaver]

....and if only a "screensaver" (a completely incorrect name for a non-crt
display) went hand in hand with "battery saver".
Feel free to jump on me here... but what is the point of a custom
screensaver on a mobile phone? Screensavers were originally invented to
prevent phosphor burns on old CRT monitors where if the same image (such as
your word processor icons or desktop) was displayed in the same place, over
time it would burn the phosphor coating in that location and you'd get a
kind of ghostly image or your desktop (or whatever) whenever you used
another application.
Ok, so one might argue that a screensaver has now evolved into something
that is aesthetically pleasing. Now I can see the point of this on a PC - it
looks interesting or fun, but on a phone? Why? It's in your pocket or on
your belt most of the time. How long do you really spend sat there just
looking at your phone screen for long enough for the screen saver to come on
and then long enough to appreciate your custom screensaver?
The point of the nokia clock screensaver is that the backlight is powered
down and it makes the screen black (other than where the clock digits are of
course) - this uses very little power. If your screensaver was displaying
something of interest surely you'd want the backlight on? And if it's
graphical, surely this is going to eat power due to the processing overheads
of the graphics. Both combined - how long are your batteries going to last?
I'm not trying to have a go at people who want to use screensavers on their
phone - I just want to know why on earth you'd want to do that given the
huge disadvantages of the battery drain?
Comments from phone screensaver lovers/wanters please...
