The phone randomly switches itself off. While it's on it works
perfectly, but usually within an hour or two it will switch
itself off. Does it in my pocket with keypad locked, or just
sitting on my desk.
Also while accessing the menu, it often resets itself to the
default screen.
Is this something I can fix myself. or does it need to be sent
to a Nokia repair centre? I should add that I do have a data
cable.

Not on an 8310 it won't, they don't use an elastomer.
Besides, it's not the screen going off that's the problem here, but the
whole phone. Usually a firmware problem, but can be battery related as
well.
