I have just bought a 6310i and like it very much. However, neither the
instruction booklet nor the on-line user guide gives an explanation of the
little "plug-in" at the top of the back of the phone. ( NO illustration of
the back of the phone anywhere?).

Since it is close to where the antenna is supposed to built in, I assume
that this is a plug-in for an external antenna. Am I correct? If so, Any
suggestions about external antennas (models, where to buy)for this model?
The reception seems to be very good, indeed, as it is, but I have not taken
the phone on any trips to marginal receptiona areas.

Sorry if this is an often answered question. I am a Nokia newbie.

    Franz

    [Aerial connector?]
That little opening is the aerial connector for the hands-free car kit
(CARK-91). The little rubber plug protects the connector from dust and
humidity and needs to be removed prior to putting the phone into the car
kit. So if you don't own a CARK-91 (or any third-party car kit with an
aerial connector), just leave the rubber plug where it is.

    [Good reception]
The 6310i has a fairly good reception even in areas with bad signal strength
although the signal bar indicator is a bit too "optimistic" for my liking:
with only one or two bars on the display it becomes practically impossible
to make or receive calls. My Ericsson T39 with the IAT-10 high-performance
aerial still beats it hands down on reception in any given cellular network.

    Don't worry, it isn't an FAQ. It's merely self-explanatory. ;-)

    Re: 6310i help

I think it is generally accepted that Ericsson reception is better than
Nokia, but the Ericsson's I have used seem to cut out before Nokia's in the
same area, allowing only emergency calls where the Nokia will allow general
    calls.
I think you are either a Nokia or Ericsson person, probably down to the
    first phone you got.

The rubber bung should be removed to fit the 6310i to a Nokia car kit, if
you don't have a car kit leave the bung in place.
Good luck with the 6310i, it is a great phone.

Vice versa over here. My Nokia 6310i cuts out long before my T39 even starts
    getting reception problems.

My 1st phone was a Nokia 1611 - way back when mobile telephony was still in
its infancy. I don't say that Nokia produces only bad phones - among all the
junk they make they also have one or two relatively decent models, e.g. the
    6310i.

That's exactly what I wrote, too.

BTW: Would be nice if you could avoid top postings next time. Thanks.

Thanks for all the answers. In fact, there is no rubber plug on that aerial
connector; must have come off either here or at the seller's. Nothing
criticalf for the workings of the phone, I hope?

As to ' self-explanatory': I checked the booklet and the web page again and
still could find no reference, but I suppose if I were to look at the car
kit accessory page I would find it. Still ...

The second part of my question really referred to any non-mobile antennas
(say, to use in a room with poor reception). Any thoughts?

If you remove the rubber plug you'll see a socket where you can
connect an external antenna such as what you might use in an
automobile. Only the correct connnector will work. In mobile
accessory stores you may find a "magnetic mount" antenna that would be
suitable to mount on the roof of your car and there may be other
external antennas you can connect through this socket.
