Over the years that I have been using a mobile phones there has been a
"Classic" nokia born every few years that was a flash of designing
brilliance, a marketing wonder or a tecnological leap, the kind of phone you
asked Santa for (and never got because of inevitable high price)
So far my personal list is: 6110 (or 5110), 3210, 7110, 8210, 9110 and it
kinda stopped there... All the new camera phones are out now but I dont
think any of them (especially nokias) really stand out (like the 6110 did
for data back in it's day, the 7110 for WAP, the 3210 for.....well
everything) I think the 7250i, 6600 and the n-gage (many problems aside)
could be considered but i'm not really sure...
Does anyone have any thoughts, comments abuse about this?? Are nokia
slipping?? etc...
Comments appreciated,

Agreed. It paved the way to the SymbianOS frenzy!
But guys, I still remember back in summer '97 the amazing NOKIA "Banana"
phone (don't remember the exact model number). It was an extremely stylish
phone in an era when phones were bulky and ugly.

the 6110 was a brilliant phone, i *think* i'm correct in saying it was the first
Nokia to support custom ringtones via SMS or cable.

The 51XX series (5110, 5120, 5130, 5160, 5185, etc) were and are still
popular. Some Nokia offerings of the 51XX series are still being
offered as new units. Even though the unit is very basic it is one of
the more popular series. I believe it was with the 51XX series that
Nokia introduced "X-press on" colour covers and of course all the
other manufacturers followed (imitation is the sincerest form of
flattery I guess.)
Beyond that the 63XX series could have become a classic, but it seems
as if Nokia doesn't intend for this line to be a long seller as
they're phasing it out.
Similarly for Motorola one of the most successful models was the
"Star-Tac" series of phones. The most popular now would seem to be
the V60 derived phones.

I think the 63XX series came out of the 6110 which was a classic so they had
a lot to live up to. After the 6110 no real huge business/data technologies
came out (GPRS wasn't the good.....) so they had no where to go, couldn't
improve on perfection.
I think another great classic (not Nokia) has to be the siemens SL45, the
first real mp3 players phone, with removable media and everything. It was
also the complete data phone (for it's time), pity it wasn't made by nokia,
i'd certainly have bought it if it was!
Thinking about it more the best one for me has to be the 7110, I think it's
still the best looking phone out there. Pity it had to be so plagued by
reliability problems, I still use mine every now and then just to show off
the slide cover in public... That really could make anyone look or at least
feel cool!!

Must agree there. I keep a 6150 in my car glovebox as an emergency phone if
I forget to bring my 6310i out with me. Fits the CARK-91 as well :-)

Another vote for the banana phone, whaever its number was.
On the streets of Jakarta they were such an ikon that the street sellers at
the traffic lights, who offer a very odd assortment of goods, were selling
copies of them (non-functional) just because it deemed cool to be seen with
one. However these same merchants later had a phase of selling (well,
offering) 5 foot tall inflatable giraffes, so maybe they simply did not know
much about anything.
Will my new 6800 turn into an ikon? Maybe - the fold-out keyboard really
does work for SMS and email and it is really hard to go back to using the
phone keyboard. But I feel build quality is not close to older Nokiae.

why?
My wife has a Samsung with camera and it's rather good.
The display is a million times better than my 6100, and the ringtones sound much
better too. Like they're coming from a speaker bigger than the phone.

Hello,

Because he "came" from a Nokia which satisfied him, and he doesn't really
trust this kind of phone offering a digital camera, which appears as a
gadget to him. He needed a phone, and if he could (i.e if it was available
at this time) he would have took another 3310.

I didn't try, but ringtones don't sound that bad (polyphonic, too), but I
wonder what's the point of such a feature. I mean, it's a better sound that
the "old" beep beep of older phones like 3310-3410, but it's still used to
signal a call, so we could stick to the old beep beep.
