Verizon is still using TDMA on roaming?

I went to Lake Powell and my phone was on analogue the whole time. What's
    up with that?

Verizon has NEVER used TDMA. The use CDMA (mostly cellular, some PCS) for
Digital and AMPS for analog roaming. There are some roaming agreements in
place for CDMA roaming as well ... no TDMA what-so-ever.

    Where's Lake Powell?

There are a couple parts of the country where Verizon WILL roam by default
on a TDMA carrier. Kingman, AZ is one of those places. Is Lake Powell anywhere
    near Kingman?

Ick. It's in Coconino County, AZ, so not the dreaded Mojave Cellular
    system (Kingman, AZ).

Erm...Verizon has a B-side cell license in Coconino County, AZ, SID
    1026 in the PRL.
Alltel is the A-side licensee, SID 53 (same as the Phoenix system).

You should have had no trouble picking up a CDMA signal in Coconino
County, unless you were on the edge of the coverage area.

The B-side in Coconino County used to be licensed to a huge group of
people, but apparently their license was either cancelled or sold to
    Verizon Wireless.

Arizona RSA 2, which Verizon has a license for, includes Coconino and
    Yavapai Counties.

    I'll have you know that:

    (a) I haven't graduated from college. I'm planning on probably getting a
degree from UC San Bernardino sometime in the future, and I put in a couple
years at Dayton, but I haven't finished college yet.

    (b) I'm pretty damned good and learning the lay of the land. Only took me
a couple weeks to get a feel for the major roads when I moved out here.

Ain't my fault I've never heard of Lake Powell.

    :P

I'd imagine not. Way north of Interstate 40.

Well, around the Grand Canyon, you'll roam Extended on Alltel (or so I hear,
I've never been there). So if for some reason you can't pick up the VZW signal,
you'd think the phone might roam on Alltel.

Unless Lake Powell is further than I thought from the Canyon...

(Or the phone in question is set to not use B-side, but I'd think that if it
is a relatively new phone, the PRL should override that setting anyhow)

Geez, Steve. You need to get your legs out from under that desk and
go cruisin' around the West! There's some great places out there away
    from the hard drives......

Wait 'til we get the engine back in it. We'll sail out into the

Perhaps, but since Verizon is a CDMA carrier using CDMA phones, their
customers roaming on a TDMA carrier would only roam in analog mode,
which is what seems to have happened to our original poster,

    Yes, I do!

But my close-to-three-thousand-mile trek from Cleveland to the Los Angeles
area will have to be enough for now. I will be going up to Vegas on business
next month, which is cool because I've never been there, and then the wife and
I will be going up there again when I finally get around to buying Celine Dion
tickets (she's a huge Celine fan).

Other than that, not a lot of time and money for roadtrips right now. I love
roadtrips, so that's not the issue... Another problem with roadtrips is
that newborn babies don't cotton well to sitting in cars forever, and we will
    have one in early April.

I just visited Los Angeles for the first time on Wednesday. Well, the suburbs
anyhow (Beverly Hills and Redondo Beach). That was cool. I live up here in the
desert, "up the hill" as they say (on the other side of the Cajon Pass), but
I will have to familiarize myself with LA's five million freeways as I
expect to spend some more time down there in the future.

I'd love to, but the wife doesn't do boats, and I kinda enjoy hanging with her.
Besides, I roadtripped down to Columbia to visit friends, on the way to
Jacksonville FL to visit other friends, back in '97... but I don't know anyone
in South Carolina anymore. My friend in Columbia was in school at USC, and she
ended up moving to NC to take a job in the psych department at Duke.

    Right.

But as it turns out, they were supposed to have had native CDMA coverage
from Verizon, or perhaps Alltel, in the area where they were using the phone.
