so then, i signed up for a 2 year contract that is up in a few months.
i went to a sprint store to see what i could get for an early
renewal. i understand that what is offered varies greatly from
location to location, but this(as i understand it) is general sprint
    policy right now...

if i am a new customer, i can buy a $230 phone and get an instant
rebate of $130. if i am renewing, i get that same rebate, but i have
to pay the $230 and mail the rebate in.

so, the only incentive to renew is to save on activation. big deal.
that is at least partly mitigated by the pain of sending in a rebate.

especially with number portability, i was stunned that sprint could
give a crap about retaining customers. 0 incentive?!?!?

My wife's old phone finally gave out after 4 years, she went to the local
Sprint store and was told the same thing as you, pay now and send in a
rebate form, wait 6 to 8 weeks for your money. She ask them if they could
give her a instant rebate, she was told not at this store but they would at
certain stores, the store in Nashville was the one that was close to us, so
she drove up there and got the Nokia 3588i for free, paid no money, free
activation right there at the store, she left with a working phone. The
other store giving instant rebates is in Memphis,TN. So ask what stores in
your area, are giving instant rebates for existing customers. The wife was
told this is an experiment in select stores to see how the response is, and
they are not giving out the information about this program with out the
customers pressing for the information. It worked really well for us, great
    job Sprint.

    Good luck, Ken
