Took the leap and bought the Treo 600 (which totally rocks) and I want
to be able to access my corporate email - handled by Exchange. I know
that Sprint provides the Business Connection software that will do
this, but it has fairly significant security holes (since it allows
access to your desktop) and I need to be able to do this with minimal
interference on the servers my IT team handles.
So I basically set up a new POP mail account and set a server-side
rule in Outlook to forward all mail to this new address. While I can
spoof the return to look like it came from my corporate address (yeah,
I know, the headers tell the tale) I can't reply to the messages
easily. Since they were forwarded, the sender is, well, ME. Outlook
rules have a REDIRECT option, but this does not seem to work (checking
with the IT folks on that now).
Any other suggestions? Any "light" AND secure server add-ins that can
handle this?
Thanks in advance.

Exchange 2000 Server allows a setup where by email is accesible over the web.
Is that a possibility for you?

That'd be Outlook Web Access. If you could get your company to run it over
SSL (on an https:// website), that might work well for you.
It's probably the safest way to do it.
I don't recall whether Exchange supports IMAP over SSL. Exchange doesn't do
POP3 at all.

Exchange 2000 Server most certainly can allow POP access, its on by default,
although some administrators turn it off.

I have the misfortune of having to babysit an Exchange 2000 server and I
don't recall it doing POP, but it's been a long time since I had to do
any configuration of the server. You might be right, but I'm going to double-
check.

My work uses OWA but my 4900 does not do frames, there is an option on
Exchange to offer up a non frames version but the mail admins here see
no complelling reasons to turn that feature on as I was the only one
to complain about it.. Oh well.

If any of you are using Novell GroupWise 6.0 or 6.5, its Web Access
works right out of the box on handhelds, including my A620.
Here's an article about it

Re: Exchange/Outlook Email and Sprint Phones
Yeah, my office has OWA (Outlook Web Access) set up. Unfortunately,
due to the complicated framed layout, it appears like dreck in the
Blazer browser. So that is not a great option.
We do have POP set up from our exchange server, but we have it set up
with VPN as an authentication requirement. Unless someone knows of a
VPN client for Palm OS5, I am SOL there as well.
We are ALLEGEDLY going to have SSL POP available next year, and that
is supported in Eudora, but I am a geek and need my mail on my Treo
NOW! ;-) After all, I didn't get a smartphone only to keep carrying
a Blackberry.
Thanks.

Re: Exchange/Outlook Email and Sprint Phones
There exists a VPN client for Palm OS 5. Check with the publisher to make sure
it will work with a Treo 600.

Finally got around to checking.
I'm logging into the Expunge server now.
OK, I made a mistake, and you were right (this time anyhow). Definitely
does POP3.
