Maybe someone can offer me some insight here.

I've been with Sprint PCS since late '98; I got turned on to it by a
friend who worked with Best Buy and other companies as a Sprint rep
when they were rolling it out.. I'm on my 9th phone, if you can
    believe it.

In the beginning, it was GREAT! Cheap plans, first incoming minute
free, no contracts, lots of other perks..

    It's been downhill ever since.

I would have cancelled a little more than a year ago, but Sprint was
the first to come out with data plans -- which is something I'd been
waiting for for years. The Wireless Web at 14.4 was even acceptable
for me for a while -- I could hook up to my laptop and get e-mail,
telnet into my shell at work - fine for me..

Then Vision came out, and it sounded great. I signed up for one of the
first "Unlimited MB" Vision plans, thinking Sprint had finally done it
    right..

Well, we all know what happened there. Going from selling connection
kits and pushing it as a feature of the phones, to making them
contraband and cancelling people's vision for using it that way.

    I've read all the posts and heard all the arguments for and against;
but I don't care. I'm leaving Sprint if they don't come up with a
    better data plan.

Verizon has their NationalAccess plans where you can use voice OR data
    by the minute - 1xRTT data/voice - $35/mo for 150 minutes, $55 for 400
minutes, $75 for 600. I'd gladly pay something like that.. (I have a
$50/500 Sprint plan now.. The price per minute would basically be the
same as the 50/500 plan now plus $15 for the vision pack..) You CAN
hook it up to a PC; they mention "Faster FTP" as one of the features!

Why can't Sprint do this? Why don't they offer this!! This really,
really annoys me. If Verizon can, Sprint should be able to. I don't
want data service for tacky ringtones and screensavers and sending low
quality crappy pictures. I'm not twelve years old, for chrissakes.

Oh, and by the way, is it just me, or does the on-phone web browsing
seem just as slow with Vision as it did with Wireless Web, or even
more so?? And why doesn't sprint support real SMS/Text Messaging??
Logging into the minibrowser and having to submit a form and watch it
refresh each time you want to send/receive a text message is awful. I
saw a friend's AT&T phone operating just like AIM.. I was jealous..

Yeah, Sprint has the LIMITED data pc-card only plans (which means a
separate piece of equipment and a separate plan) for $80. For that,
Verizon gives you UNLIMITED data access and access to their EVDO
network here in the DC area!

    I've looked at T-Mobile's data service, too.. It's only GPRS - 56kbps,
but they're much more accomodating than Sprint.

I really, really think Sprint is barking up the wrong tree by offering
this "toy" data service - ringers, games ($3.99 for a game that
expires in a month??!) and doodads, and not giving anything to
"professional" users to work with besides their overpriced
    megabyte-limited card-only plans.

Does anyone know of Sprint offering a "real" data plan, that is
competitive with Verizon or T-Mobile's service?

Do you think I could get anywhere with the retention folks in terms of
data access, since I've been a customer for five years, never late,
and always on a plan $55-75/mo?

Frustrated, but when my contract runs out in August '04 (Regretting
that 2-year contract with the Vision plan..).. if they don't have
    anything better, I'm gone.

It probably will with time, but at a price. Are you willing to pay

If you're so envious, why not just switch to AT&T or Cingular?

I don't want a new number. I'm hoping now that phone numbers will be

I guess you didn't read when I said I have a contract until August
2004, and that is the only thing stopping me. $175, and having to buy
    a new phone. Very annoying.

Why do people get defensive? Do you own Sprint stock or something? Do
you really like the ability to download ringtones for $2 a pop?

What makes Sprint so special to you?

Nice reply.. If you're gonna reply just one line, at least clip the
    quoted post.

Bandwidth for what? To download Monkey Ball for $3.99 a month? To
download a MIDI ringtone for $2? To use Vision with your laptop,
hoping you won't get cut off?

Dont be a jerk. What part of my complaint isn't legitimate? What does
    Sprint have over any provider?

I've been with Sprint probably longer than you've had a cell phone; so
    please don't say I haven't given them a chance.

What am I paying for now?? I would gladly pay a little more if I could
USE the service for what I wanted to.

Basic data service isn't a bell or whistle. Ringtones, java games, and
1 frame per second TV are "bells and whistles".

Sprint seems to go only for bells and whistles, while ignoring the
    core functionality.

And my point, if you read my post (which apparently nobody really did)
is that Verizon and T-Mobile offer this and more, but they aren't much
    more expensive.

My post was in response to the *previous* poster, Tyann.

Had I been responding to your post, I would have replied to you.

    Get it?

So not only did you have to be *completely* inane, but you=20
had to do it twice twice.

Yes, I did that on purpose.

    I work for SprintPCS
    I *don't* speak for them.

I don't think you would get anywhere with retentions. I'm not aware of any
additional data plans to offer. (Also having a contract through 08/04 would
hurt your cause). You might have some luck calling a vision tech and asking
them what they recommend. If no luck ask to speak to a vision supe (I can't
believe I just recommended escalating a call, but sometimes that's the best
    bet)

New plans come out all the time. You can't be the only one in this boat.

But I've yet to find anything the other carriers provide that Sprint
doesn't that I use and the price is cheaper. I see no reason to
change other than the next time I want a new phone, I will
change if Sprint continues to offer only flip phones. I've been
a Sprint customer since 1998 or before, not sure and I'm only
on my second phone, which I bought about 4 months ago.
Glad I did since all they have now is flip phones. Hope my
Sanyo 4900 lasts another 4 years or so till I need/want
    another phone.
