I am a new Sprint customer, still on the trial period. I have a Sanyo
8100 and when I power it up it doesn't receive calls. All incoming
calls rollover to voicemail, then I get a voice mail notification.
Once I place a call, or sometimes two calls, then everything becomes
"normal" and I can receive calls. Anyone else have this problem, any
    suggestions?

    Thanks.

It's an undocumented feature of Sprint, but rest assured new Sprint
customer..there is NO EXTRA CHARGE for it.....enjoy......
Seriously..the system doesnt know your there. when you "power up" the phone,
it attempts to let the nearest cell-site know your there and to look for you
    at that site first.
It's a problem with THAT site or their switch. Goodluck with Sprint. They
will tell you it's YOUR handset or you simply dont know what your
    doing....Eddie

It's not clear to me why you are powering down the phone
    periodically.

If you generally have no need to roam, I'd recommend setting the
phone on "Sprint PCS only". It saves battery anyway. But if you power off
and power on again, if you've got the phone set to "auto" it will take a
little bit longer to get you in line to receive calls on the handset. That
could be a factor in why you're going to v-mail right after powering up.

*18 Talk will register you with the system immediately.

I'd say swap the phone out. I'm not saying the phone is the problem
(who knows? It could be), but in all likelihood, forcing an ESN change
on your account might just clear up whatever screw-ups are on your
account that are causing this. And in any case, it will definitely rule
out your handset as being the problem.

But admittedly, periodically powering down the phone should not be an
issue. Maybe he hangs out frequently in movie theatres and libraries
and out of courtesy powers off his phone in these places, like we all
    should be doing.

Any chance you have marginal signal quality (perhaps low bars on the
indicator)? It is possible that the tower thinks you are too far away to
    handle voice calls.

You usually have to wait about 45 seconds from the time the phone
finds a signal to be able to receive calls. This is normal. Same thing
has happened on most if not all of my phones.

I have found if you need to receive a call immediately, you can just
dial to any number, let it ring once or so--then it will receive calls
as soon as you press the end key. I imagine *18 will do the .same
