I just got the Sanyo 8100 on Tuesday and saw someone post a message about
their volume on that phone fluctuating. I can't seem to find the thread any
longer to see how to solve this problem but I seem to have the same thing.
Does anyone know what to do? I tried to call CS and it was a too long of
wait but I do have the latest firmware according to sprintinfo.com

I don't have the 8100 but read the strings you're referring to when I
was researching which phone to get.

The consensus was that the 8100 has a very narrow ear piece (in terms
of the speaker holes that feed the caller's voice to your ear) so that
you have to line it up just right with your ear. When it is aligned
properly you hear very well and the volume is very sufficient. If you
move the phone from that "sweet spot" however, you quickly lose volume
    as the speaker gets blocked.

Someone suggested that after awhile you will learn to hold it just
right, or if you don't and find this bothers you, you might want to
exchange it for a different model. If this were the case I *believe* a
Spring rep said you would not get charged for reactivation **but check
    on that first**.

If you take your phone to a local Sprint store, they will upgrade the
8100's volume setting for you, along with a few other tweaks.

I switched to the Samsung I500 PDAphone, but I used to own an 8100. I
upgraded it right before I traded it in. Trust me...the upgrade made a
HUGE difference in the volume control.

    Hope this helped.

    Re: Sannyo 8100 volume problem

Thanks. I was thinking that it might be me but I couldn't get over the fact
that I was doing something wrong. lol I won't be able to return it since I
got it from Best Buy, a replacement for my N400 which was locking up and
    dropping calls.

I had a real bad experience with them this time by the way. They gave me
such a hard time returning my old phone for a new one. They told me I had to
go to a sprint store and have them check the phone to see if it was damaged.
Meanwhile I just came from a SS and told them what I was doing, they didn't
blink an eye and didn't check the phone. I told the BB rep that I bought the
phone here and the service contract here so why should Sprint have to check
the phone, they (Best Buy) should check it. Plus I just came from there and
why should I have to go back there and stand on line there for them to check
out the phone when I was here (at Best Buy) the day before and the rep I
spoke to told me that the reasons I had for returning the phone were valid
and would be exchanged with no problem, just show up with my two year
    service agreement.

Then the guy from BB gave me more grief when he told me that he would honor
the replacement but I would not get any more service on this agreement
because I was getting another model phone. With that I told him to get me
another N400, which I knew he could not because BB stopped selling them at
least two months ago and is a discontinued phone. The 8100 I got was $120
more than what I paid for the N400 and was completely willing to pay the
difference in price. Then the rep told me is says in the agreement "This
Plan is fulfilled when a product is replaced after the expiration date of
the manufacture's warranty". The phone I was replacing was five months old
being replaced back in July. The contract started November 17, 02 and this
would be my second replacement. He tried to tell me that the phone I was
replacing was under warranty from November 02 when I didn't get the phone
until July 02. So, how can a product's warranty start before the product is
actually bought? It can't be. I was going to leave this be until I started
typing this out. Now I think I am just going to complain to BB to get my
remaining 11 months back on this contract.

    Thanks for letting me vent.

Thanks. I'll bring it next time I'm in that area.

What can they do except upgrade the software? What if you already have
    the latest version?

I'm not sure what happens exactly. All I know is that i dropped off my
phone to them. I came back in about 30 minutes, and my 8100's volume
setting was fixed. I think they will install a firmware fix. Good luck
