i can't find too much about this phone yet....anyone have any comments about
its quality? especially reception and earpiece volume, speed and such? this
one has suddenly come into competition with the 8100 for me, just when i
thought i had made a decision!

Best Sprint phone yet. I don't use Readylink and the camera/video stuff
are fluff add-ons as far as I'm concerned, but the phone rocks. Clarity
& speakerphone is better than the 4900 it replaced. Reception is at
least as good. Earpiece volume is fine for me (I adjust it as needed
depending on who's calling). And it feels great. Looks good too.

The Sanyo 5500 is very expensive, but most people think it's the best
Sprint PCS phone _ever_. Go to www.phonescoop.com, click on the
"Phones" link at the left, and you can get information and user
reviews on almost everything available. I've handled the 5500 in the
store and want one in the _worst_ way. The sound quality and handling
are absolutely CDMA "Rolls Royce." Someday, maybe....

John,
I cannot compare it to the 8100; however, I can relay my own
experience with it after several weeks.
Build quality is excellent. It feels very solid. Nice color. Could
be a bit smaller + lighter, but then again, what couldn't?
Reception; my experience with reception has been amazing. I can carry
a call across the I-5 Camp Pendleton stretch which I couldn't do
previously. Also talked through a few canyons near my house without
missing a beat. Simply excellent. I'm very impressed with Sanyo in
this regard.
All volumes seem great to me. I must say, the speakerphone being
simplex does kinda suck, but still, works as long as I'm a bit
patient, use it in a quieter environment, and warn whoever I'm talking
to.
Speed, etc.; I have no complaints.
Downsides? Biggest has to be the price. Also, the default camera
settings are a bit whacky, and it tends to regress to these whacky
defaults almost all of the time. Haven't gotten to play with its
"true SMS" because Sprint's dragging ass; but, what's there appears to
be very straightforward and nice. Of course anything is nicer than
Short Mail.
Great phone, highly recommend!

Steve,
What phone did you use previous to the 5500?

How is the battery life? I understand that some readylink (or PTT
with Verizon) phones constantly communicate with the tower, even
without the option enabled, thus wasting the battery unnecessarily.

is the 5500 recommended if the camera, video camera, and ready link aren't
going to be used much or at all? even the speakerphone (if it's still the
wait for the person to be done, then wait two seconds, then speak) is almost
useless too....are those the main reasons why everyone likes this phone and
that separate it from other sanyos?

Yes.

I haven't found that to be the case the few times I've used it. It's
*much* better than the speakerphone on the 4900.

Are you sure the speakerphone is simplex?

I tried to look up the information on Sanyo's website but they just
say Quality Speaker Phone. This usually means that it is a crappy
speaker phone. I would like to know if it is simplex or otherwise.
Here is the link

Well, I call tell you it is *not* a crappy speakerphone. I've had
numerous conversations on it and it's better than many if not most
landline speakerphones I've used.

Re: 5500 reviews?
I have this phone also, and no one even knows I am on a speakerphone. I had
the 5300 and I just wish it had had a speakerphone, which is why I bought
this one. It is a great phone and pretty too. The video is fun to play with
also, but I bought it for the speakerphone.
