I recently swapped out my i300 for an i330. At the time I was told
that I didn't need to beam my data to the new phone, but could just
restore it to the new phone from the Palm Desktop.

After pulling out most of my hair because I can't get it to work,
SprintPCS support sends me a semi-generic troubleshooting PDF that
    includes the following--

Question: Can I sync my existing backup from my old Palm OS device to
    my SPH-I330?

Answer: NO! Due to the integration of the cellular handset into the
I330's Palm OS implementation, some of the system files that are
    synced during a HotSync
operation are unique to the I330. Dropping a backup from ANY other
Palm OS device may cause network/serial connectivity and other
    features to stop working
properly, or may result in a permanent "Fatal Error" every time you
power on the handset until you do a hard reset. If you have an
existing Palm device, simply beam addressbook, datebook and other data
to the I330. When doing an initial HotSync, create a NEW user name for
the I330. You will then need to use the Palm Install tool or your
other application's install programs to finish setting up your I330.

I cannot even fathom a company (Palm, Samsung, Sprint) leaving me
stranded without an upgrade path for my data. I've got thousands of
contacts, notes, and appointments in this thing. There's got to be
some kind of software bridge or data conversion tool to get me past
    this problem. Anyone????

    Desperate/pretty much screwed if not

If you can copy your reply to irked at angryforlife dot com, I'd
    appreciate it.

Copy or export the data files to a different location. Install new palm
desktop software and copy the dat files to its directories. That worked
form me...Made same mistake when I upgraded. Though I had lots of problems
with I330 and Sprint eventually upgraded me to the I500. I then use the
above procedure to sync it also....
    Hope this helps

Do you have a Macintosh? Are you using Palm Desktop or MS Outlook?
I had zero problems moving data, so if you provide more information,
    perhaps someone can help you.

    Then, don't restore system files.

Let's assume you are Qubert Samsung and your home data directory for the
    i300 was C:\Program Files\Palm\SAMSUNQ

BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE MAKE A COMPLETE DUPLICATE OF ALL FILES IN AND
    BELOW THAT DIRECTORY. NOW.

Underneath that directory are the subdirectories for Address Book, Date
Book, et al. Extract the data from them by launching Palm Desktop, selecte
each category (Address Book, Date Book, ToDo and Memo Pad) and then export
all the files to a specified location.

Then, change from your old username to your new username (and, don't give
the same username to the new PalmOS machine as the old). Import the
files back in, and Viola! The main batches of data are there.

Now, other apps may not be so easy; may require you to reinstall them using
the program's installer (I'm thinking AvantGo here) rather than by stuffing
the file in with Palm Desktop Installer. But, since you _did_ give the i330
a different name (I hope), you can try moving them in one at a time. If the
phone blows up, do a hard reboot, remove what you just moved in, and then
    restore.

If you have a program that's name-locked to a particular username, you can
often ask them to send you a new unlock key, citing the change of Palms.
Tell them what Sprint said to do. If that does not work, there is a utility
I found at freewarepalm.com which lets you rename a palm, but it forced a
reboot on my Samsung and did not seem to be terifically stable, so again,
    backups are your friend.

BTW, the newsgroup comp.sys.palmtops.pilot may be more helpful with these
    kinda problems.
