How on earth can Sprint PCS be allowed to charge me a fee each month for
number portability when my number can NOT even be ported?

I want a piece of THAT action!

Call CS and explain you want a year of credit for that. Explain its
not a required FCC fee. They can't remove the charges, but they can
give you credit. I got a $40+ credit and will do it again next Aug.

I'm curious, why can't your PCS phone number be ported? Or do you mean
your landline? I may be in the same boat, so need to know what to look for.

Only the Top 100 markets have porting capabilities at this time. IIRC, the
rest of the country will be capable to port phone numbers sometime around
    April.

If that was the OP's complaint, he has no issue against Sprint. The delayed
porting of non-top-100 markets was government sanctioned.

Frenchy might not be in one of the top 100 markets, and the cellular carriers
won't be required to provide portability in the smaller markets until later
    this year.

Because the process of establishing the ability to port=20
into our systems was a government-mandated change, and=20
they, in turn, allowed us to directly recoup the costs of=20
    that mandate.

That fee has nothing to do with your number. It has to do=20
with our systems, and they were changed.

I am not for or against Sprint here, this is just a general comment..

The government did not mandate that a cellular company MUST wait until
the deadline date before it can be rolled out in specific areas, it
mandated that it must be ready by that date, big difference.

I remember hearing that if you are not in the top 100 markets that they
estimated it to be 6 months from then, but it could be earlier. The ruling
stated that if someone not in the top 100 called to ask about it and was
interested the company then had to have it ready 6 months or so from that
date, being a customer is interested in either coming to or leaving the
provider. Are they going to update the porting dates ever?

The porting fee has been in place with every cell phone company for a
while now. It is hard to get a number that is portable unless you are in
    a metropolitian city.
