The other day, my approx 2 month old Treo 600 developed a major problem with
the LCD -- it's a big yellow blotch that takes up about 1/3rd of the screen.
It does look like I dropped a marble or something onto that part of the screen,
but thankfully, I know for a fact that the problem occured during 20 min time
period that the phone was in it's protective case, and sitting in the cupholder
    of my car.

The Treo 600 continues to function fine, other than the LCD problem, which
prohibits me from using most of the non-phone functions.

I went to a Sprint PCS store yesterday, and the first thing I did when a
salesperson walked by with another customer was ask if they had any Treo 600s
in stock, and the answer was yes.

After then having to wait about half an hour before a salesperson was
available, I showed her my Treo 600 display & original receipt (I bought it
from that same store) & asked if they could swap it out, her first response was
the good old "Oh, we don't have any Treo 600s in stock right now!" After I
told her that the other salesperson (manager of the store) had told me when I
first walked in that they did have at least one in stock, she went & talked to
him real quick, then came back & told me that I had to deal with
    PalmOne/Handspring regarding the warranty problem.

I was thinking that may have been the case, but now I just went to the
support section of Handspring's web page, and they're saying that Sprint PCS
customers who have issues with Treo 600s still under the original warranty need
    to deal with Sprint!

So I guess my questions are:

Is this LCD problem somewhat of a common occurence? I'm hoping so, because
otherwise, I'll have a hard time convincing anyone that the problem wasn't due
to some sort of abuse on my part.

Does anyone have any tips & experiences with getting Sprint to swap out Treo
    600s under the manufacturer's warranty? I'm hoping it's something that I
should be able to do at any decent Sprint store (or even a Sprint associated
store like a Radio Shack), instead of having to mail in my Treo 600 & then be
without a PCS phone/PDA while I wait for Sprint to mail me a replacement.

Once I do get a replacement Treo 600, I will plan on adding the optional
    $4/month insurance plan for it.

    Thanks

    Tim

SPCS warranties all their new phones for a year. If they had one in stock,
they should have replaced it, if the damage was not caused by dropping the
phone or dropping something on the phone. I'd recommend calling SPCS CS,
explain the circumstances and ask for a manager. Provide all the details you
can, including the store address, and the parties you spoke to and see what
    they have to say.

Also, if you have another SPCS store in your area, you might try dropping in
there and see if you can replace it. Call them first to make sure they have
    a 600 in stock.

Nothing has been noted yet, and as far as I know, the QA department is
not investigating anything like this, but as long as it doesn't look
like you beat up the phone, they should have ordered one for you.

Yeah, go to a store that does what they're supposed to do, obviously
this rep didn't know much about their job if they didn't even bother
to let the tech look at it (who should be the first person to make any
decisions in a situation like this).

If it's not too inconvenient, try a different store in the area.

Not a bad idea, $4 a month plus a $35 deductable is a good way to
protect yourself incase it's broken and not covered, lost, stolen,
etc. Just remember that you'll have to go though Lock/Line to get a
replacement, not SprintPCS (phone numbers should be given to you in
    the store).

Actualy, it's a much larger cost to replace a phone with a new one
than it is to order a reconditioned phone form the warehouse. The OP
got a discount on the phone, and now Sprint will also eat the cost of
the unit, roughly $150 diso**** (if they got it as part of a new
activation) plus roughly $200 more off "cost", plus another "cost" of
the unit, so now we're up to $950 to replace a $600 phone lost. The
reconditioned phones cost considerably less, and will have the
original remainder of the warranty, or 6 months, whichever happens
    second.

Most stores won't swap out a defective Treo 600 for a new one unless
it's within 14 days (or the manager is extremely nice). The first
store, as long as the phone didn't look like it was beat up, should
have ordered a phone for him.
