Hi,
I bought sanyo 5300 with a one year sprint contract in Jan 2003, then a
second 5300 phone with a 1 year contract in june, 2003.
Now, they have a new model, the onew with the walkie talkie feature.
Since I am no longer under contract with the one bought in Jan 2003, what is
the procedure to buy this new phone? Cancel the one I have now then buy the
new one, or buy the phone and cancewl the existing one?
thanks,
jeff

Re: A question about Sprint Contracts
You do not cancel a phone. You could cancel a line, but that is
not what you want here. You can buy a phone and do a change of
equipment. However, you might want to wait five more months to be
eligible for the phone rebate.

Re: A question about Sprint Contracts
Buy the new phone--you'll probably pay full price if your contract
isn't up. Call SPCS on a landline and tell them you want to do an ESN
(electronic serial number) change on one of your lines. They will
guide you through programming the new phone, and voila! Your new phone
will be active; the old phone will be deactivated automatically and
you can sell it on ebay.

Re: A question about Sprint Contracts
I just did this yesterday, and it couldn't have been easier. And for those
SprintPCS naysayers who enjoy tearing down the CSRs, the service I received
was exceptional! Fast, friendly, not pushy, accommodating. Couldn't have
been a better experience!
I bought a new Toshiba VM4050 to replace a Sanyo 5300. From the new phone, I
dialed *2. As I went through the automated system, I was asked if I wanted
to replace my current equipment or add a new line. I chose the option to
replace my current equipment. I was placed in queue for a representative and
was told that it would be a three-minute wait. After about 30 seconds, a CSR
came on the line and assisted me. He verified that I wanted to replace my
existing equipment. He then noted that my contract was up and asked if I
wanted to renew my contract and get some additional services (7PM N&W, for
example). When I declined, he accepted my decision without pushing me and
completed the process of activating my new phone and deactivating my old
phone. At the end, he asked if everything had been taken care of or if I had
any other questions for him. Having none, we ended the call with the CSR
telling me that it would be up to two hours before I could use my new phone.
I didn't check the new phone until about four hours later, but it was,
indeed, working just fine!

I've usually been able to use a new phone within seconds after
completion of an activation, either online or with a CSR. they must have
occassional computer glitches that they always say 2 hours.
As others have pointed out, it might be prudent to call back *2
and check online to make sure you weren't assigned a new contract

We just got my wife a used P300 off eBay, and it did, in fact, take some
time before her phone number stopped ringing her old phone. About an hour,
as I recall.
The P300 is a Vision phone, and I suspect part of this may have been due to
pro-Vision-ing (I was mucking around in the phone's menus the other day
and found that I now have a sprintpcs.com e-mail address that I didn't ask
to have set up. I assumed it was part of the provisioning process... even
though I am specifically *not* paying the $15/month for PCS Vision. I further
assume that since I'm not paying a monthly fee, I can use Vision at a per-
minute rate, but since my wife only cares about making calls, I doubt we will
be trying out the service any time soon.)

Re: A question about Sprint Contracts
It would be at a per kilobyte rate. She can use her new e-mail
address from the web site also.

So it uses airtime and gets charged per Kb? As opposed to using airtime
and being charged an additional 39c/minute a la Wireless Web?

Re: A question about Sprint Contracts
It doesn't use airtime (minutes) at all. Just the per kb charge ($0.01)
You could surf the web for a long time and not rack up much of a charge.
It's when you start downloading things that it adds up.

Re: A question about Sprint Contracts
Same here. The system has me up and working within minutes of changing
ESN's.
That being said, for the change to take place quickly, I am in my home
market everytime I make a change.
I never try to change my ESN online, when I am roaming or out of my home
market/city.
I have never tried to do it with a CSR but see no reason that would work
fast as well.
The online method gives more control and less 'lip' and thus I prefer it
but, to each their own ay? :-)
The last couple of time I called *2, I got great service so, I really
couldn't and can't complain.
I test out a couple of phones every now and then just to see if they can
beat my ST7867 reception-wise, and just find it easier to do online is all.
FWIW and YMMV. ;-)

Re: A question about Sprint Contracts
Last time I had an occasion to attempt an ESN swap online, I got an error
message when I tried to activate my phone. I learned thereafter that the
online system does not currently support the activation of a Vision-capable
phone.

Was it in the drop-down selection menu or did you do the "other" option?

The reason they won't activate Vision phones online is they want the
opportunity to UPSELL you Vision service.

Re: A question about Sprint Contracts
Um, could be.
I see a bunch of vision capable phones on there though.
Maybe they have fixed the issue or added the phone since then?
Hey "Unsaid", how long has it been since you tried?
