A lot of folks are signing up for the free/donation ringtone sites.
A word to the wise is not to give your phone number to these sites.
Many are allowing ringtone files to be posted that are clearly copyright
infringements
If the publishers go after these sites they will be able to easily subponea
them to turn over our phone numbers.
This isn't like napster or kazaa where it was difficult to trace the
infringer
here it's simple they've got your phone number.
So don't give them FREE/DONATION SITES your cell number if you don't want to
be exposed
Better safe than stupid

Re: DO NOT GIVE YOUR PHONE NUMBER TO FREE/DONATION RINGTONE SITES
Who cares. They aren't going to come after people with these ringtones and
screensavers on their phones. If they go after anyone it will be the people
charging for copyrighted material. Even if they did come after individuals
all you would have to do is remove them. No biggie.

Why would they do that? They've not even attempted that so far. =20
They've gone only after the sharers. These sites that seem to have=20
become such a crusade for you present no legal danger to the end=20
user, because the end user is not a participant in the sharing of=20
files (at least, not on any of the sites I've visited thus far).
Even 3GUpload, when allows user submissions, has an approval process=20

Unless, of course, you've found even one example to back up your=20

Simple really..
Because Ringtones is BIG Business 3.5Billion last year. They are going to
want to protect themselves and their future businesses.

It takes two to tangle - The FREE/DONATION SITE - THEMEMBER/ USER
The RIAA first went after Napster Shut it Down
They raided Kazza's offices last week
Now they go after the end user. It would be a lot easier for them to get you
IF they had a telephone number linking to the copyrights they are enforcing.
My crusade as you call it is designed to save good people a lot of grief
down the road.
Some will listen and decide not give up their phone numbers
Others will want to follow your advice and play the numbers

It's the shrillness of your plea that takes the "skin off my nose". Of
course you're corresponding to a guy that doesn't think Darwin is allowed
enough room to work in this country, and don't give a crap one who gives
their phone number to who.
If you really want to be safe just toss your phone in the toilet ----
problem solved. 'Sides, these things can cause cancer and lead to an idiot
from Texas jacking this NG group around. THOSE are bigger problems than what
your going off about.
Cool with you, Franklin?

Re: DO NOT GIVE YOUR PHONE NUMBER TO FREE/DONATION RINGTONE SITES
Hi Tom.
Don't toss your phone in the toilet just cos you can't steal someone's work
Don't burn down your house because you want to repaint it
Just do the honest thing and buy the paint
Whatever you do, don't expose yourself by giving your phone number to
unscruplous people
FREE/DONATION Sites who have already proved they have no respect for peoples
properties and rights
End Of Story

The problem I have is that the "concern" you keep expressing, RIAA=20
suing an end user over files NOT peer-to-peer shared, but provided by=20
a site, that simply hasn't and won't happen. The end user has no=20
legal worry from it. None.

Re: DO NOT GIVE YOUR PHONE NUMBER TO FREE/DONATION RINGTONE SITES
ya, ya ---- you're the one with this phobia so no matter what I'm not going
to sweat it. I've used these services in the past, and -never- had a
problem. So I'm not going to burn my phone down or paint it with stolen
paint ---- or whatever it is you're blathering on about.
And I hesitate to mention this, but I also use peer-to-peer software. So
when you're sitting around your plush RIAA office this bit of information
will give you something else to panic about.
And on last thing --- who the f*ck are you to call anyone "unscrupulous"?
Quit whistling out of your ass, you'll live longer and feel better doing it,
Franklin.

So far as I'm able to determine, 3GUpload does not sell names or=20
contact information. They use donations, and affiliated sales (I.e.=20
they offer accessories for sale). Participation is not required in=20

Re: DO NOT GIVE YOUR PHONE NUMBER TO FREE/DONATION RINGTONE SITES
As was explained by the gentleman in the other post
Just don't give your phone number to the free/donation sites
It's just that simple
I am exposed by giving my phone number to FREE/Donation Sites
Exposed for downloading Copyrighted Images, Ringtones etc....
I am less Exposed IF I don't give these sites my phone number.
Shouldn't Have to anyway. What does a FREE/Donation site NEED with MY Phone
Number?
Are they going to call me up?
For What?

In order for you to be "exposed", doesn't there have to be=20
something to which you might *be* exposed? I'd sure think=20
so. And, so far, you haven't provided any evidence at all=20
