I've been thinking of converting my laptop to Linux and the main thing
keeping me from doing such is that I'm concerned about not being able
to connect my Sanyo 4900 to my laptop with Linux. Has anyone been able
to get a data connection with their phone in Linux?
Thanks in advance,
Steve

I suggest that you set up a second partition on your laptop's hard drive
and install Linux there. That way you'll be able to dual boot between
the two OS's.

Yes...been using it on one of my laptops. I'll get to the details when
I get the chance. Using Redhat 8.x

I would suggest also trying on the alt.linux forum,

Linux software is open to anyone, maybe someone has written a driver
and/or program to do it?

Redhat (and I believe Debian)) have the USB drivers in the kernel. Its
under the USB ACM devices support (CONFIG_USB_ACM). You'll want to
turn on hotplugging so that the modules load on startup.
Start your Linux and the USB drivers will load and you'll see your
phone, but sometimes you'll need to turn your phone off and back on
for the drivers to see the phone. You should see several lines of
kernel loading activity and the last line (or near the last), it will
have something about the USB Abstract Contol Module driver has been
loaded.
Then you'll need to creat a connectoid (pppd call). Look for the
correct /dev and use #777 as the dialup number. Might as well as
build some scripts to run the dialer.
