To enter codes dial the code (just like any other phone number) then press
the OK key and select "Save Phone #" from the menu
##VOCODER - Change the voice encoding settings (this doesn't work, as the
    network setting takes priority)

##040793 - Modify phone's data speed, the built-in cap. Changing the phone
to 144/230 mode can improve speed over the default setting of 144K, as it
    removes the phone's built-in cap

I tried this but it does not seem to work. What am I missing????

You're not missing anything. First, the system has to allow the phone
to access higher speeds. Just like the people who try to turn their
"Readylink" on the 8100, download the 7200 software onot a 4900, or
try to make a Sanyo 5150 / 4700 take the 3G data speeds, they found
out that the system itself won't allow it.

It's all in the billing database, it knows what model phone you have
(cannot be changed since it's linked by the ESN) and it knows what
features and limitations are approved by Sprint. If you put the data
speed of your VM4500 higher than what's approved by Sprint, the
billing DB will see that you have a VM4500 and won't allow you to
access the higher data speeds, it will either not work at all or work
    back at the regular speed.

Be careful playing with the ## codes, I've seen many people come in
(more each month) who've done this and their phone is messed up. It
gets noted in the account that they were played with (and the cust
doesn't have to tell us, we can easily check), and the quickest way we
can resolve that issue is to completely wipe out the entire phone, all
the programming, downloads, phonebook, pictures, etc.

Sounds like destroying copyrighted material which is illegal. However, the
site does say it works. What are some other ## numbers and how do they
work. I just get an error.

    Party pooper. :-)

    difference in browsing speed

Are you talking about when someone fscks up their phone and Sprint
has to erase their phonebook, pictures, and settings to get it back
to normal? If so, you're on some serious crack.

I think it's done in the ##3282-Save menu. (You *might*- I forget
    exactly- your MSL, too).

Don't forget, I'm the guy who has to "fix" this when people come in
    with it.

99% of the time I get a "I didn't do nutin', it just started doin'
    that".

For once, I'd like a customer to come in and say "Yes, I did the ##
thingy and I messed up my phone". At least I might know WHICH ## menu
I'd have to go into (and yes, there are many).

    Yup, absolutely no difference.

What confuses yours truly is why one would want to try their internal
settings. It's not going to improve coverage or transmission speed and there
is a strong possibility that they will make a wrong change to their
settings, which brings up your prior comments.

    type ##040793

    then hit Enter

You're on your own at that point and
if you mess up your phone it's your fault.

Yabbut that setting looked like it *might* have! We all know companies
limit things to keep congestion/thruput down, and this might have been
    a free "upgrade".
