I posted earlier about the Windows SmartPhone platform, and someone
responded that Sprint would have one later this year.

Realizing that a pdaphone/smartphone is gonna set me back some real
cash, I thought I'd start saving now and get one in the Spring.

Where can I find out about what Sprint will or will likely carry in
the future? Do they do press releases on that stuff, or is it
top-secret till the week before launch?

I'd like to avoid plunking down 600-700 bucks only to discover that
the ideal phone will be released two weeks later.

(I read T3 mag by the way, which is chock full of really fantastic and
    mouth-watering.... GSM phones. =P)

My dreamphone would use 3G (or 2.5G.. whatever), have a robust and
fast OS, a great browser, attachable thumb-keyboard, memory expansion,
Mp3 capability w/ stereo headphones and a very small form factor. The
i500 comes closest now with the right size but without some of the
features, though the G1000 has the features without the form factor.
(the reason I'm looking for an MS OS is that I can write stuff for it,
though Palm has enough support that I could prolly find whatever I
wanted, but for a price). If it has a camera, it should be a decent
one, not like the pitiful Sanyo 8100 that I own atm.

    Thanks for any info.

Brian, in most cases, SPCS and the phone manufacturer like to keep a lid on
new models being developed for the system. In saying that, there are ways to
find out what new models are in the hopper. There are some folks who keep a
watch on the FCC pages to see what phones and data sheets are sent to the
FCC for approval. When they see a new model with SPCS listed, they pass the
    word down the line.

Phonescoop.com and other independent cell phone sites often shows advanced
phone information, gathered from FCC forms and links, before SPCS announces
a new phone for their system.

You know, I would like a phone that DOESN'T have a camera. That
DOESN'T have a PDA, or try to function like one. I don't need a web
browser, or a fancy screen saver.

What I would like would be a phone with a cable that hooks up to a PC
and a)charges the phone, b)dumps the call log to the pc, and c)backs
up my phone numbers to the pc. I would like a phone that "locks" onto
a signal and doesn't drop it in a major metropolitan area. I would
like a phone with a smaller display, bigger buttons for my huge
fingers, and, well, ok, lots of polyphonic ringtones for the audible
    caller ID thing.

I wish the companies would stop trying to make the "One device to rule
them all", and just make a phone that works very well.

You mean like a software update that will enable SMS on the RL2500?

No, like SprintPCS will carry the Kyocera 7135

Don't put all the blame on Sprint for that one. I had a sales rally
where we got to meet with reps from each manufacturer, and evern
Kyocera said that we *would* carry it, and many people across the
country who met with Kyocera reps also said that they said the same
thing. Kyocera even had it on their web site that Sprint would carry
    it.

IMO - it was a good eecision not to carry the 7135 considering
    Kyocera's track record.

It's just an example of not making a decision based upon what is
==> expected <== ..or.. ==> promised <== to happen. In Technology,
things change fast and things don't always pan out as expected.
I make no judgements about the Ktocera 7135, except that if someone was
waiting for SprintPCS to carry that phone, they are still waiting,
regardless of whether or not its Kyoceras or Sprint's fault it never
    came to pass.

    Therefore Rule #1 still stands:

    Rule #1, don't buy promises.

and rule #2, never believe a promise from a salesperson.

i.e. We'll have a tower over there soon.

and rule #3 as you told us

Everyone at Sprint is in sales.

I didn't read it that way ... When we have a company producer meeting, the
carrier will send in reps from underwriting, marketing, accounting, and
claims, just we can meet all those other folks and get their take on what's
going on in their respective departments.

    1) In what way do you mean this?

    2) I disagree, if only because as soon as porting is available in my
area, I plan on leaving Sprint for Verizon *only and solely* because
Sprint's offerings for PDA phones, frankly, sucks. I'll lose a lot to
make the switch, and I have no other qualms with Sprint, but a quality
PDA phone is my primary concern; and the 7135 beats out any offerings
Sprint has. If Sprint and Kyocera could've gotten it together enough to
offer the 7135 - or if Sprint could throw a bone to those of us who
don't want a camera, downloadable ringers, or other such nonsense
cluttering up what we need in a phone - there'd be one less customer
    leaving Sprint.

I'd hate to break it to you, but *everyone* who works for *any
    company* sells.

The managers are selling a good crew.

The research department is selling their ideas.

The IT guys are selling a good and reliable network to the company, to
    make their sales go easily.

Customer service department are selling reliable support & selling
that support to keep existing customers

The PR department is selling a good image.

    The CEO sells his company.

The mailroom clerks sell reliable shipping.

The janitor is selling a clean work area.

No matter what position you have, in any company, it all goes down to
    sales.

Everyone is in sales. You're at a party, someone asks you who you
work for, you tell them, they ask you a few questions. Guess what,
    you're selling.

Someone buys a computer off you. They call you a few weeks ago with
an issue. You help them resolve it. You're selling reliable service
    and easy solutions.

You work for a car dealership, you buy one of their cars, while you're
driving it, you're advertising that you drive that car and none other,
    advertising = sales.

Me? My first priority, as I've said is the tech / inventory room.

Inventoy - I'm selling to my sales people. I will have the product in
stock with they need it, and when they need extra, I try to get it.

Tech - I sell solutions to our customers and employees. Someone comes
to me with an issue, I sell them a solution.

Wait till you decide you want BlueTooth, and discover than Verizon is
just as bad as SprintPCS in providing BlueTooth enabled phones.

When we carried Kyocera, I saw more Kyoceras come across my tech room
for work than any other manufacturer. The 2035 wasn't too bad, and
neither was the 1135, but the 2255, 3035, 2345, and 6135 were all
    consistantly in my tech room.

They're not as durable as most phones, reception was below average,
and they were very sensitive to average wear and tear.

Personally, I wasn't upset at all when we were told we wouldn't be
    carrying Kyoceras anymore.

    I agree wholeheartedly here.

The camera is gravy, as far as I'm concerned. The "fee-for-use"
    midlets available are silly.

I carry a PDA, a Phone and an iPod. In the winter that's fine because
I have plenty of pockets, but winter will be over soon. I'd just like
something that will do most of what those three do, that doesn't cost
a mint or take up as much space as a lunchbucket.

These phones exist, and some of them are getting quite good. Mostly
they exist in Europe and Japan. Some of them are available here but on
    networks I'd rather not use.

Ridiculing this is a bit luddite - like saying "what.. you want a
radio that also plays CDs ?!? How bout cassettes, mr fancy pants!? I
spose you want a clock on it too!"

    duh
