Has anyone noticed that they're now being charged to receive 1-way SMS
messages ("notifications" in Sprint PCS parlance)? When did Sprint notify
it's customers that this service which was once free would no longer be
free?

Re: 1-Way SMS no longer free?
Well, it never was supposed to be free. Those notifications were only
supposed to be included if you had Wireless Web or Vision, but for some
reason, were available to everyone. If you don't subscribe to either, you
basically got a free ride until now. While it'd probably be nice, I'm not
sure that Sprint needs to tell you that your free ride it up. I noticed it
on my bill too ($0.20 for 2 messages), and while I could probably get a
credited for it, it's just not worth it. Oh well. Can't expect them to
stay stupid forever.

There is no such thing as one way SMS. Perhaps you are thinking
of Text Messaging. Which type of phone do you have, Wireless Web or
Vision?

Re: 1-Way SMS no longer free?
Jerome, I just have a basic calling plan without Vision. Does that imply
that I automatically, by default, have wireless web? Or, is wireless web an
"extra" that you must sign up for?
Thank you,
Jeff

No, it doesn't automatically imply you have WW. It's a completely different
protocol than Vision, used on older 2G phones.

Re: 1-Way SMS no longer free?
It depends on whether you have a Wireless Web phone or a Vision
phone. What type of phone do you have, Wireless Web or Vision?

Let's try this at a more basic level. What model phone do you have?
I'm trying to check on this. I'm getting charged for every one of=20
them, too, and I'm on a Vision pack, so at least SOME of them should=20
be included.

Yes it does appear that they are cracking down on this. My brother
used to never be charged for text messaging (he's not on a Vision
plan) but in the past month or so it's being charged extra (10 cents
each) on his bill. What's up with this?

OK, that clears up a bit.
See, "Wireless Web" isn't just a term. It's also a brand name. The=20
name of the previous generation data service that SPCS had on their=20
network (OK, *has*). All current phones that have Web services built=20
into them use the newer generation data service SPCS calls "Vision."
Just like with the older Wireless Web phones, the data services of=20
Vision phones (and your 4900 is a Vision phone) are enabled by=20
default. The part we offer you is a billing plan that covers the=20
phone's use of those data services.
So, the answer to your question is, really, both. It's included in=20
the capabilities of your phone, but it's also an "extra" that you=20
must pay for. By the KB if you opt not to include the service=20
"packs" that we make available. Or the one flat fee if you opt *to*=20
include one.

O/Siris,
Thanks very much for taking the time to offer the detailed explanation.

Don't you love the way no one is told (certainly not CSRs) and you don't
know till you see it on your bill, regardless of what salespeople told
you when you signed up?
And then Sprint wonders why its Customer Service is rated worst.
