So, I was browsing around on the SprintPCS website and I thought I'd
    upgrade my plan.

Now, apparently if you do it restarts your contract. This annoyed me so
much I chose not to upgrade the plan.

Are all cell phone providers doing this nonsense, or is Sprint the only
    one on crack?

With number portability now a fact, all carriers work real hard to stick
their customers into two year contracts.

Normally, changing plans midstream into an AA shouldn't extend your current
contract, unless it's a promotional plan or there is an option like going
with 7:00 PM N & W that you want to go with. In addition, it could just be
boiler plate text for folks who aren't customers yet, but are considering
    SPCS.

Best thing to do is to call SPCS and speak with a CS rep to find out ...

I did speak to a CS Rep. They told me it would restart my contract. The
funny thing is, I would actually be paying MORE money. Baffles me.

Call again. Speak to three CSRs you can expect to get 4 different
    answers.

Better yet, call again and ask for the floor supervisor. Tell them Bob
Smith said it should extend your contract. :->

Any rate plan change you make will result in a new contract start date.

If I am not mistaken, unless you are going to get the 7pm n&W you can
go with no contract for and extra $10 per month, which you can change
to a contract at anytime---I have done this serveral times, when I
wasn't sure if I would be happy with a part of the plan/phone etc. I
believe this is detailed on current brochures.

In neither of your posts in this thread did I see what plan you wanted to go
with. As I mentioned, if you were going to change to a promotional plan or
add an option like 7:00 PM N & W, you might have to extend your contract.

I wasn't going for a promotional plan. On the website they have a
listing of plans, one of them is $ 65.00 for 1100 minutes (just from
memory). That's the one I was interested in. You can get the listing,
in fact, when you follow the link about 'changing plans'. I could care
less about the 7pm nights and weekends.

I checked it both ways, as a new customer, or as a current customer for my
zip code for the $65/mo. plan. As a new customer, I could select not going
on an AA by paying $10 more a month.

As a current customer, and changing plans through my manage page, there was
no comment about needing to extend my AA, unless I was going to take the
    7:00 N & W option.

I don't mind being on the contract, I just don't want to extend it.

WTF? Maybe I should try calling back again. When I'm feeling a little
    bit more patient . . .

I updated my plan from 600 to 2000 minutes and my contract was not
extended. I did this while Sprint was still offering the same exact
plans they had when I started my contract so nothing extra was added or
    removed except more minutes.

Well, you must be one of the lucky ones because most everyone I know
(including myself) had their contract renewed when changing rate plans.
Adding things like PCS2PCS or Vision did not extend the contract, but
    actually changing plans did.

    Re: Plan Upgrade

Is this something recent, because I know I switched plans last summer or
fall and didn't have to renew my contract. The salesperson told me I can
switch around to different plans without resigning a contract, which is how
it should be, it's not like they are losing anything. I was on a regular
nothing extra plan, switched to lower minutes and nothing said, I can even
switch around to more minutes if I want.

Just curious when this started happening.
