    Nor have I, and that's going back to 1998 when SPCS wasn't charging to
    activate phones, save for adding my daughter's phone to our account 3 years
    ago.

    As usual the one and only moron is wrong. The only activation fee I ever
    paid was back in 1998 ($12?). Re-activating my phone after being lost for 4
    days-no fee. Activating my latest phone-no fee. Buying a friend a new
    phone (her 2nd)-no fee for her. Look up the true definition of may. It
    means they have the discretion to charge it or not. I have a hunch Philly
    that you have had to pay a fee each time for obvious reasons.

    We did not get charged activation when switching to the phone we bought on
    eBay a couple months ago.

    It's not the first time I've switched Sprint PCS phones, and I've never
    been charged activation fees. In fact, I've never heard of any carrier charging
    activation fees for existing customers just for switching phones. Certainly,
    none of the carriers I've used do.

    And if I am not mistaken, Mike works for an indirect dealer, and the rules
    might be different for them.

    Don't know if the rules are different. It was kinda random during that
    time - which made it a little harder for me to sell phone upgrades. I
    was a bit newer on the job then too. I had just started, now I manage
    a store with the same company. That means I take a little less guff on
    the phone now, and I'm more careful in my language to make sure I ask
    for exactly the right thing. If someone asked for a fee today from one
    of my customers, I'd either argue the point or call right back. I've
    also found a better activation hotline, geared to indirect retailers.

    Quite a bit has changed.

    On the other hand, an ESN swap is an ESN swap. I have to think it was a
    quota thing back then. With WLNP on the horizon, every time I called, it
    was hard to get off the phone without being pushed for a contract
    extension. It was almost so bad that one couldn't make a payment over
    the phone without a renewal. These days, they'll even do a plan change
    in the right circumstances without a renewal.

    Just as an aside, I'm not a Sprint supporter.

    I have days when they make me very angry.

    I've had their service for a few years, and I've sold their service for
    a number of months at my current job, with it as a distant sideline
    (meaning I sold it perhaps four times in three years) at another job.
    I'm not certain, but I think I activated initially in 1997, long before
    I worked anywhere that sold cell phones. I don't have a dealer plan on
    my account, and I don't have a special hotline for customer service. I
    had a short stint on Verizon in perhaps 2001 and I hated it. I shopped
    T-Mobile, AT&T, Cingular and Verizon last fall, and chose to keep
    Sprint. I decided to keep the Sprint because I still liked the deals
    they had. I even got a Go Phone because it represented a better deal
    when I wanted a temporary line in a different area code. Even the
    Siemens A56i, a $69.99 prepaid phone, bested my Sprint A620's SMS
    performance, and when I switched to using a T68i, I became even more
    frustrated with my A620's sms performance. With MO-SMS on my 8200, I'm
    about as happy as I can get with my personal customer experience. The Go
    Phone is canceled (AT&T customer service really wasn't that bad.) and
    I'm back to Sprint-only.

    I'm not against going in for retention deals, and I don't think Sprint
    is the best option for everyone.

    You're right about the WLNP scenario. I noticed that as it drew nearer there
    was this insistent urge to get a contract renewal everytime one called in
    for any reason. I had a way of dealing with them in that regard and
    sometimes it took some raised voices.

    My statement stands. It's plausible that in some channels, fees were
    accessed as a norm, but i always insisted on confirming that my customers
    weren't being charged one. I don't know what leverage or clout i had but it
    seemed to work. One just had to be firm and insistent.

    I have no position with Sprint. I sold Sprint phones (retailer). ''Most''
    refers to the customers who noticed the charges and came back to have it
    resolved. ''All'' had the charges credited.
