I have a friend that I chat with from cell to cell. She has Cingular and
I have Sprint. Her voice always sounds static and I find it hard to
understand (makes me feel old and hard of hearing). Isn't Cingular
digital? Or, could it be the phone my friend is using? I thought a phone
was more or less the same and expensive phones simply had more features.

Depends on the network she's on. The older Cingular network (TDMA)
still has AMPS in some parts, so if she has a very old Cingular phone,
she may be calling you in analog mode.
