Hi all, maybe you can save me a ring-around-the-voicemail, or at least
make sure I'm on the right path.
I was sucked in by a small but nice Time write-up and just got the new
DataWind (http://www.datawind.com) PocketSurfer, which is as slim as a
checkbook, almost as light and lets you surf the Web via your cell
phone.
I have the Vision data service for my Samsung A660 (and FYI, my Better
Half works for a Sprint licensee so I'm not 100 percent knowledgeable
about data services and levels of same).
This thing works with Bluetooth phones, or any cell phone with a
Bluetooth adapter (via the USB port). I got the lil gizmo to pair with
the Bluetooth adapter just fine.
The place I run into problems is when it connects (#777), after
initially trying to RX and TX packets, it goes "packet aborted" and
can't connect to the Net (actually the dedicated ISP you pay $10 for,
which has special setup for these devices).
So... do I probably need to pay more for a Sprint data service, like I
read here some Treo and PDA users have to? At some point, this gets
ridiculous, price-wise. Oh, and the DataWind folks hadn't heard of this
problem, just urged me to tell Sprint to give me the data service the
offer for laptops. (How much does THAT cost?;-)
Thanks for any insight. The "cool factor" of this lil device is almost
good for half the cost. But of course, I'd like it to work, too;-)

re:DataWind Pocket Surfer-packet aborts
You may wish to try Sprint's circuit-switched mode (i.e. the 'pay by
minutes' option on the PocketSurfer). Unfortunately Sprint tries to
restrict the use of its phone from being used as a wireless-modem in
packet mode (none of the other carriers provide such a restriction --
and most offer unlimited usage at very affordable rates -- e.g.
T-Mobile at $19.99 and Cingular at $19.99).

Yep, it worked the other way, but man, it was COSTLY. Oh well, guess my
brother gets to put up the cute lil device on eBay for someone who's on
another phone service (the missus works for a Sprint affiliate, and
that savings makes this a minor annoyance;-)
Thanks,
Barney
