    hi all,

    brief recap:
    my phone: nokia 3588i
    plan: f&f

what is my alternative since sms text messages to
[email protected] doesn't work, even with the "100 sms text
    messaging" added to the account?

vision? how much difference in price?

also, i'm a nokia guy at heart; do any of these 3 new phones coming out
    support vision? 9300, 6255i, 6230?

    thanks again,
    parker

OR... can someone else with a F&F plan tell me what phone they use to
successfully receive text messages via [email protected]?
i'll try a cheapy off ebay first just to satisfy my curiosity as to whether
this is a phone or network issue...

Is this messages *to* you, or messages via the phone's SMS? If it's the
latter, you don't need that. Just the phone number alone should
    suffice.

If it's the former, did you know you can turn that off? On the
SprintPCS web site. For reasons of my own making, I can't access the
SprintPCS web site right now, so I can't give you precise directions.
Basically, there's a function if you click on "Text Messaging" (I think)
called "Settings." It will, repeating: I think, bring you to a multi-
tabbed page, and one of those pages will include three check boxes. I'm
betting that at least one of them, referring to email, is NOT check.
Click the check box to put a check in it. If there's a save function,
click on it. And that email address should now work.

    hi rob,

you left me a couple questions, so let me get them all into one post...

i'm uneducated on these differences (shortmail, sms). all i'm wanting is to
allow a program on my computer to automatically send a plain text email to
    my cell phone.

i'm on the spcs website now. i've logged in, and clicked on the link on the
right that says text messaging. a "compose a message" screen is up, and on
the left i see a "settings and preferences" link. that takes me to a
messaging settings screen. i see the 3 horizontal check boxes, under
"message types." they were all checked. i've unchecked them all, and clicked
on save all changes. then logged off, signed back in, all the way back to
the screen, and then rechecked them all. saved again. opened up outlook,
typed in my [email protected], blah blah in message body, and
    send. so far nothing.

Oh... well... crap... All I can say at that point is that, when I was
there, I would have checked for this myself, tried a message to my own
phone, and then to yours. If no message, then I'd submit a trouble
    ticket to our data department.

Has it *ever* worked for this phone?

It's not necessary the phone I just sent email to my nokia 3588i at
[email protected] and the phone received the message.
Could be that the particular phone is defective or an account setup
problem. And I don't even have any text messages on my account just use
    it very rarely.

no. never had a reason to try until now.
this problem has no relation to my f&f plan?
can you suggest a cheap non-vision phone for me to try to find on ebay, to
do a ESN swap and prove it's the phone and not the network?

just received the following "returned mail" from one of my attempts...and
yes i put in the "x"s.

wow, just got a message to go through. my centurtel.net isp email server is
apparently having a problem, or sprint is dening them... but i finally got a
message through on my gmail account.

    sorry for the hassle all.

NOW i just need to find out if it's centurytel's problem or sprintpcs'?

The message error suggests your phone never received it. But the cause
    can be a bit tricky.

SMS is automatically setup on the data side of Sprint's system when an
SMS-compatible phone is activated. Function-wise, it's part of Vision,
but it operates on its own. So the switch to F&F may have played a
part, but it isn't the cause.

If I had to guess (and that's all I've got is a guess), I'd start with
reprovisioning your phone. First, try swapping back to *any* phone,
wait 24 hours, and swap back to this one. Another 24 hours, and then
try to send an SMS. If it works, then it was just a minor data error.
When I worked there, the provisioning system had a very limited self-
correcting functionality. If it didn't setup right, it usually STAYED
not right until one of us Vision techs carried out a
"deprovision/reprovision." But SMS is both more simple and more
involved at the same time. It provisions *not* based on Vision, but
based on the phone. As a tech, I'd have tried the "Depro/Repro"
(shorter name for it), but warned you that, in 24 hours, if it still
didn't work, you'd have to call again and have a trouble ticket setup.

The cheapest non-Vision, SMS-compatible phone I'd expect you'll find is
the Nokia 3585i. Discontinued, but it got good (if not great) reviews
while it was selling. The 3588i is functionally identical, and more
recent. Candybar phones, but decent ones, from what I understand.

I'd still recommend you try "stepping back" and then forward again as I
explain above. Maybe that'll fix it.

LOL, no problem. Glad it's working. I guess you can disregard my last
