My old Kyocera 2255 (IIRC) had a great display: You could read that
thing regardless of lighting level or angle. Unfortunately, that
phone, apparently like many Kyoceras, had other issues. Now I have a
lower-end Nokia and the thing is literally unreadable in bright
sunlight. A colleague of mine just switched to a Sanyo 8200 and
    reports the same problem.

I'm currently considering "upgrading" my plan, adding my wife, and
getting new phones. The Sanyo VI-2300 looks about right for our
needs. Does it suffer the same deficiency?

If so: Is there *any* phone, anymore, that has a display that's
    readable in direct sunlight?

Yes, I also have the problem reading the screen on a Sanyo 2300 in any
kind of outside environment -- sunny, cloudy, etc.

I didn't have this problem with my old Samsung A460 though, so it is
possible to develop a phone without this problem.

That's unfortunate. It seems that, in all this rush to make phones
do anything, they're forgetting that, first of all, they're supposed
    to be *phones* :/.

Well, there are many other reasons I don't care for this Nokia I
currently have, and we'll have to do something about my wife's phone,
anyway, so: Other than the display being difficult in sunlight, how
do you like the 2300? The main criticism of the 8200, which is the
closest thing to it, was that the sound was poor. How's the sound
    on the 2300?

I haven't had a problem with the 2300 in terms of sound. It takes a
little getting used to in order to automatically position it correctly
next to your ear, and dealing with the side volume keys, but now I don't
    even think about it.

Reception has been great. The speakerphone, although half-duplex, is
load and clear. So, everything else seems find.
