Can voicemail be turned off for a period of time?
If so how do I do it?

Yes: It isn't a phone feature, it is something you have to ask CS to do for
you. Doesn't cost you any more/less. If your area doesn't do it, a
work-around is to enable call forwarding to a non-existent number. The net
is no usable voicemail. That is one or two options. dr

Forwarding the phone to a non-existent number will keep you from receiving
any incoming calls, period.
