AFAIK, there are no Carl's Jr.s around here. There is, however, Red Robin,
and their burgers do cost six bucks or more. As I recall from my one and
only visit, the prices ran about 5.50 to 8.50 (the 8.50 might have been for
the fish or something). Unfortunately, the menu on the web site
    (redrobin.com) doesn't show prices.

I will say I think they are expanding too fast -- I know of two within five
miles of each other and another going up within ten miles. This will be
made worse when their customer base starts dying from hardened arteries
from the Royal burger -- it's a bacon cheeseburger with a fried egg on
top. (Yes, I had it, just for the experience. I didn't finish my entire
    meal, though.)

    Try Hardees's. Same thing (almost).

    > Robin,

A glorified hamburger joint that fooled this unsuspecting patron into
thinking there was more to the menu. From the outside it looks like your
typical Chili's, Applebee's, etc. (including a bar). But once inside
you'll find... well, almost nothing but hamburgers--a zillion kinds. I
have one within 5 minutes of me and will never be back. Yea it says
something about "famous hamburgers" on the sign, but I really didn't
expect to find *only* hamburgers (with a few other odds and ends, but
mostly just burgers). What a waste of real estate, IMO.

Back on topic: I did end up with a pretty waitress and the cellphone
    reception was fine.

Many Hardee's are using the Carl's logo, and the Carl's restaurants' kids
menus advertise the Hardee's and Carl's kids websites. I assume Carl bought
Hardees at some time in the past (probably the recent past).

Fooled? Red Robin makes no bones about the fact that gourmet hamburgers are
their bread and butter (to coin a phrase :>). If you felt misled, you
    weren't paying attention. I*M*O.

They're expensive, but the burgers they server are worth it (also IMO).

Carl is dead. But the public company he started, CKE Restaurants, Inc.
(CKE), bought Hardee's in 1997. They also own La Salsa Fresh Mexican
    Grill.

"Gourmet hamburgers?" Not in my book. I personally do not like
hamburgers cooked on a flat grill, smothered in grease (and other crap),
and then served on a bun lathered in even more grease. For that I prefer
In and Out Burger. IMO, naturally.

Oh yea, I don't walk into Chili's expecting to find only ribs
either--even if that damn song is playing in my head. <g>

But I will say I was not impressed with neither the waitress (cuz it was
a waiter) nor the cellphone reception last time I was in Chili's. IMHO,
YMMV, and all other disclaimers apply.

Ah. I *love* In'n'Out. But I also love Red Robin. I don't think the two are
mutually exclusive. Red Robin does burgers you won't find anywhere else. In
'n' Out's style, while yummy, is similar to Steak'n'Shake in the Midwest. (I
miss Steak'n'Shake, having moved from a house about five minutes away from
one of their restaurants. But having In'n'Out here makes up for the loss of
    SNS.)

No Carl's Jr. or Hardee's around this area. Used to be; I liked them.

My nephew came home one day telling of their glory, having heard about
them from some race car driver he knows. One opened close by, I had the
wife pick a burger up for takeout and it was just an average lump of
ground beef with stuff. Maybe I'll try eating in next time; nothing I
love more than a really good burger. (Food-wise, anyway.)

I've never had In 'n' Out, so I can't comment on it. I stand by my disgust
with Red Robin (yes, they do burgers you won't find anywhere else, and I
don't want to find them anywhere else). When I was a kid, Steak and Shake
expanded into the Chicago area, proved to be incompetent, and retracted out
of here again. I always made it a point to go there when I traveled
downstate. A few years ago, they tried again around here (also
overbuilding; there are two within three miles on the same state highway).
Problem is, I no longer like their food. The burgers are cold and blah, the
fries suck, and the milk shakes are no better than the milk shakes at
McDonald's, but Mc's are about twice the size for the same price (okay, so
SNS has more flavors and gives you a cherry -- BFD). The best burger in the
Chicago area is at Portillo's (but not at Brown's Chicken, even though the
owners of the two chains are brothers; Brown's burgers are almost as bad as
    SNS).
