Dialing Problem

Both of my phones are with sprint. When I call my wifes LG phone with my
Treo 650 I did not dial the area code since we are both in the same area
code. The call did not connect. I then dialed using the area code and the
call connected. My Treo phone prefrences are set to North America dialing.

Why do I have to use the area code when dialing within the same one?

Welcome to modern technology. It's now required to dial 10 digits. Just
modify your address book to include the area code on her phone numbers and
the others in your area code.

It depends on the local phone company where you are. Here in SE WI,
Milwaukee, we do not have to dial the area code. Are you having the
problem just with your treo or with all wireless phones when calling
your wife? What happens when she calls you? What about when you call
other, wireless or land line, local numbers?

Where I live (Southern California in the 310 area code) they are on the
verge of changing to mandatory 10-digit dialing. We are getting a new
area code here which will be an overlay. First of its kind here AFAIK.
I've been using 10-digit dialing anyway because many of my contacts
are in other ACs...

I don't think it matters. We have 7-digit dialing here (at least for
now). But I still prefer all my local cellphone numbers entered with the
area-code (sure helps when you are out of town). Well, at least that's
the way I did it before having a Treo.

My Treo 650 is configured to add "1" plus my area code to any number
dialed either manually, or via Contacts, with 7 digits. So if I enter
555-1111 and hit dial, the phone displays "Dialing 1-555-555-1111).
Ditto when dialing a 7 digit number from Contacts. But I mainly use this
for quick dialing around town.

Interestingly, the option to do this is right underneath the "North
American Dialing" checkbox under Dialing Options.

I have "When dialing, add this area code to 7 digit numbers: <entered my
area code>" checked too.

Under that, I have "Always dial +1 in front of the area code" checked as
well. Probably don't need this one checked, but it doesn't seem to hurt.

Ironically, if all phones had this feature we could enter our local
numbers with 7 digits. Then when the inevitable area-code change occurs,
you only have to change it in one place. <g>

10 digits are mandatory only in 'overlay' areas, where they have more
than one area code for the same area. Most areas that are not heavily
populated still allow 7-digit dialing.

There are some numbers in my phone book that I know I will never dial
when I am out of town. Those I do not need to enter with the area code.

Never say never. Like, maybe your local Domino's will at least give you
the number of the one in BFE, should you happen to be there and not know
where Domino's is; nor its number.

For now. But if or when you are forced to dial 10 digits locally, none
of those 7 digit numbers in your phone book will work (unless your phone
has the feature I described that is contained in the Treo). But if you
enter them with 10 digits, they will work, even when/if 10 digit dialing
becomes mandatory.

Of course the last place I lived that mandated 10 digit dialing changed
the area-code at the same time.

All my stored numbers (even those in my area code) are 10 digits
.. If I dial in my area code I use 7 numbers. Of course you don't
have to put the "1" in front of a dialed number.
