im trying activate my vision service but i get the error "usb cable is
connected" even though there is no cable plugged in. any way to
activate these services? ive read that you actually have to replace the
whole unit...is this true or is there a work around some how that
    you/sprint can do? thanks.

Did you try customer service, or better still go into a Sprint store and
    have them help you out?

The G1000 is a great device that was well ahead of it's time, but has passed
it's 'end of life'. I've had mine since July 2003. It has served well, but
in the spring of 2005 I took mine to the Sprint store with tech center in
Irving Texas. The hard reset tab was missing. The manager came out to
explain that if I carried a paper clip with me, I could unfold it and use
the point to reset the device. That's a bit irritating for a $650 device.

I had been paying the $4.50/month extended warranty, but they informed me
there were no repairs available and replacement inventory had been depleted.
In other words, what you got is what you got. For the last four months, the
key board switch always locks, but doesn't always unlock. If it fails
completely, I'm left with whatever I had backed up to WinXP.

The PPC-6700 would be a good alternative. Because of Sprint policies
    regarding tethering, I switched to a Cingular Moto Razr six months ago;
still use the G1000 for 'personal lists', camera, software development. To
replace both the G1000 and Razr, I'll switch to a Moto Q next quarter.
